I built up 3 man Cent Devastator and a Stormwing formation in a few months, which I centered my play style around the Tigirus buffed Grav-Cent Star. What I do is put Tiggy and the Grav-Cents in the belly of Stormraven in reserve, when the raven come in, I deep strike this mini deathstar in the midfield (through skyfury special of the Stormraven) and open fire on the most tough unit in the opponents force (i.e. Monstrous Creatures, Tank squadrons, anything with a armor save of 3+ or 2+), to surpport this unit, I use 3 droppods (loaded with Ironclad, Sternguard, and Tacticals), 2 in the first turn drop is upgrade with locator beacon to provide a safe drop site for the deathstar, and especially use Tiggy to roll on Divination, hoping to get "ignore cover" and 4++ for the Grav-Cent squad, while Tiggy also provide re roll reserve to "almost guarantee" the Stormraven carrying the Cents can come in Turn 2.
However, in the local tournament a month ago, I found this strategy is not so reliable, in some games it is OK, but in others it worked out horribly.
I myself found maybe one of the deficiency of this "parachute Grav-Cents" tactic through the games. That is I need to drop them relatively close to the enemy, as the locator beacons on 1st wave Droppod works only in 6 inches, and the units (Ironclad Dreadnought with
PF and Sesmic Hammer,
MG and
HF; Sternguard with combi-melter and combi flamer) within the droppods have to get close to the enemy to ultilise their threat. These constrains limited the positions of my core units as well as the paths of the flyers. As such, the Grav-Cents always have to land in the regions within 15 inch from the enemy, when coupled with the limit that Deepstriker cannot land in terrains, and left them vunerable to enemy assualt.
So I am revising this strategy. Hope everyone could give advises and comments. Any ideas are highly appreciated. Thank you guys in advance.
