I hear everyone goes with a flyer tyrant and I understand why its the obvious choice but apparently im a sucker for punishment because I love making things difficult. I don't want to run a flying hive tyrant.
I want to know if it is really possible to run a walking tyrant and still be as effective? what kind of build will help my tyrant stand a chance. I have no problem running high risk builds btw makes victory much sweeter when it works out, so im willing to try anything ott no suggestion is too far

Dunno the specifics, but I have seen it done.

Guard are probably useful to keep Synapse sniping from happening, and Venomthropes to give everything a cover bubble. Nothing more annoying than huddled horde nids with redundant safety nets.

The new skytyrant formation looks promising, gargoyles to soak damage on the way and moving alot faster thenn with tyrant guard.

I run a walking rant give him 2 or 3 gaurds and a venom cannon or misma cannon(points depending) have a venomthrope nearby and maybe a norn crown for extra synapse range (if no misma).
Then run him behind or surrounded by gants and send him up the middle. Hes not there to beat face but to keep everyone else in line and to drop a blast here and there.
it works for me but could be area dependant.

The only two choices that come to mind are: Tyrant Guard, they make you very durable, for a while. Hopefully it will be long enough.
Podding: this looks kinda promising, the problem with Walking Tyrants is Mobility, and the pod give you that, by the bucket! Once. But it looks doable.

If you are lucky, you can roll on Strategy, and get Master of Ambush, and that helps a great deal (around 1/3 of the time )

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER

6" movement is just too slow. What do you want your Tyrant to do for you in games? A standard one cant buff, his weapons are too short range to be effective (devourers) and in CC a tyrant isnt exactly amazing at all. You have to pod him or he just gets shot to pieces, and if you pod him you cant take guard (at least not in an efficient manner).

It'd be nice if he were viable, but youre setting yourself up to play at a severe disadvantage by taking him. If you enjoy playing underdog style, take a flyrant and just use less points than your opponent. Theres just no good reason to take a walkrant. Its not 'high risk' taking him, its just tying a hand behind your back.

If you want to play remotely competitively, I would recomend against a "walkrant" but if you absolutely want to run one, I would toss the Swarmlord into a Pod and throw him at your opponent with fast/DS units supporting him. Tyrants and the Swarmy have some beefy CC potential, but you'll only see use from it if you Pod it into your opponent.

I run a Walking Tyrant in every game I play Nids. NEVER run less than two Tyrant Guard. No matter the point level, the Tyrant needs atleast 8 wounds to survive the match with minimal worry. I typically use a Venom Cannon and whatever I have spare points for, even if that ends up being just twin-linked Deathspitters, but Devourers are of course a good option. Regenerate isn't needed and I haven't ever needed Old Adversary or any other buffs.

Melee weapons are kinda meh since ideally the Tyrant is going to pick on much smaller foes. It's not a tank or MC killer. That's what a Carnifex is for. But infantry squads crumble before the base attacks so shooting the entire time forward is a good plan.

The Tyrant Node is my preferred formation at 1500+pts, keeping my two or three HQ slots open as well as not taking up an elite slot for the Venomthropes that are a must have anyway. Not taking ANY Flyrants isn't the best plan but I still love my 3rd Edition Queen and she can't be left off the table.

I would agree with this advice completely. Swarmy gives you a +1 for reserves so he helps to support the drop pod list (negating the need for a com relay). A list with 3 or 4 pods, some flyers and some fast moving units can put serious pressure on in turn 2.
