Fluff:
Draavin Verdax was a recon marine sergeant of the Raven Guard Legion during the Horus Heresy. He was widely considered to be the greatest marksman in the legion. Among his kills included several Eldar Frasers, an Ork Warboss and an Avatar of Khaine. When heresy broke out among the space marine legions, Verdax tried to persuade Corvus Corax, the Primarch of the Raven Guard to strike against expanding traitor forces in a series of hit and run attacks. Corax agreed that this would be more wise, but told Verdax that he had to follow the Emperor's order to assault Istvaan V. Verdax survived the subsequent Drop Site Massacre and after the Alpha Legion infiltrated the remaining Raven Guard forces and corrupted their gene seed, Corax gave Verdax permission to lead stealth strikes against traitor forces. Verdax soon found a plot by the Alpha Legion to perform a ritual to ascend a captain to the level of daemon prince on
the traitor controlled world of Orvan prime in the segmentum obscurus. Verdax and his men made plans for an attack on Orvan prime and deliberately spread false information about the attack to lead Alpha Legion's spies off course. Silently infiltrating the traitor strongpoint, Verdax and his men opened fire. Verdax himself put an exorcist round in the foul daemon's head, banishing f him. Corax was so impressed with Verdax's performance that he allowed the creation of a new chapter of the Raven Guard that would be led by Verdax: The Nighthawks. After the end of the heresy and the implementation of the Codex Astartes, the Nighthawks became an independent character, however they still keep close relations with their first founding chapter. They made their world on Orvan prime and draw their recruits from the nearby hive world of Orvan secundus. Since they orbit a hive world, the Nighthawks always have a fresh supply of recruits for their chapter. Their gene seed is taken from the experimentation Corax performed during the heresy. As a result, they do not suffer from as much mutation as the Raven Guard. Their world of Orvan Prime is a bleak, rocky world that is compromised mostly of treacherous mountains, canyons and valleys. Due to it's terrain and proximity to a hive world, it is notoriously difficult to mount an attack on Orvan Prime. The Nighthawks, as previously mentioned, recruit from the hive world of Orvan Secundus and instead of having aspirants fight to the death in a series of brutal tournaments, the Nighthawks will give all aspirants basic training and will begin the transformation process for those who pass. Otherwise, aspirants are free to leave at any time. Aspirants who pass the brutal training must accept that if they choose to begin the transformation into a space marine, only the strongest will survive. The Nighthawks mostly follow the codex astartes, but there are several deviations. Firstly, the Nighthawks disregard the Codex's tactical doctrines and despise those who follow them as blind fools who are lacking in initiative. Secondly, the Nighthawks do not use new recruits as scout marines. Instead, the recruits are formed into neophyte squads and are used as a vanguard. Those who demonstrate high initiative, an affinity for stealth and ambush tactics and who are able to survive the dangerous missions are promoted to the devastator company. Those who are boisterous and arrogant and rely on petty heroics and brute strength rarely survive their first encounter with the enemy. Instead of scout squads, the Nighthawks use recon squads. There is one recon squad in each company and they are made up of marines who are best suited to stealth combat, sabotage and other work behind enemy lines. Unlike scouts in a codex chapter, which are new recruits, Nighthawk recon squadrons are elite space marines that are equipped with power armour as well as acute senses and more advanced equipment. The recon squad takes the place of a sixth tactical squad in a codex company. Thirdly, the nighthawks have the special "shadow guard", this is due to a mutation in the Nighthawk's gene seed where a neophyte will develop the ability to be completely undetectable. The neophyte's eyes and hair will darken until they are jet black and their skin will lighten until it is chalk white. They will also become psychic blanks, making them undetectable even to Psykers. They will take the place of an honour guard in a standard chapter straight after their graduation from the 10th company and are revered as the greatest examples of Nighthawks. They have the honour of accompanying the chapter master himself. The Nighthawk's chapter master is currently Adrien Vraaxis, a mysterious and enigmatic figure that has distinguished himself as the Nighthawks' greatest marksman since Verdax himself. Although little is known about Vraaxis, he clearly has some connection with the vindicare temple, as he wields an exitus rifle. Vraaxis is cold, calculating, fiercely intelligent and executes plans with perfect and ruthless efficiency. It was Vraaxis who was responsible for the death of the infamous Dark Apostle, Asim Gardor (Or The Bullet From His Rifle Was Responsible). The Nighthawks have less than stellar relations with the adeptus mechanicus. This is due to the Nighthawks' insistance on modifying vehichles and weapons based on the tactical situations dn the strategic need for specialised vehichle. The adeptus mechanicus has declared this as defacing the sacred technology of the machine god. The Nighthawks have responded by training their techmarines in the manufactorums of Orvan Secundus. They also receive all of their technology from Orvan Secundus, as other worlds have refused to provide them with armament due to their disrespect of the cult mechanicus. The tech priests on Orvan Secundus will reluctantly provide technology, as the world relies on the Nighthawks for defence. This has led the Nighthawks' vehicles and weapons to become top-quality and highly specialised. The Nighthawks are widely distrusted for their use of tactics that other marines look down upon as cowardly, but they have been proved time and time again to be an extremely effective and extremely loyal chapter.
