Hey there! So I generally play Warmachine and Hordes, but lately have been really drawn to the modeling and painting aspect of the hobby. That being said, I want to do better in all aspects of gaming and wanted to drum up your thoughts. There are four armies that I have my eye on and really want to make an elite (low model count) army for one, well, at least one to start

The four I like are:

-Wood Elves
-High Elves (mostly the fliers and cav)
-Lizardmen (mostly the larger dinos
- Vampire counts (those new ghost dudes are legit)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I dont know much about the game, just drawn to the models so Im not sure if threre is a force organization that would limit my army build. WHich army is the best for an elite force?

Come and check out my painting and hobby blog at...

Vampires are about elite heros and massed troops.

Lizards work with the monsters and lots of cheap skinks.

Your last 2 wood elves and high elves are your best option imo.

One shoots the other a glass hammer

Wood Elves can get you the lowest model count force out of those four.

They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.

Vampires is a horde army led by a super mega nasty lord more often than not. It's pretty tough to make an "elite" formation VC list that actually works without at least being bolstered by chaff summoning spells (so still ending up horde-y).

High elves is an army of elites. It's the rare model that costs single digits of points in this army.

Lizards - good starter army, medium model count, good rules. Hard to fit lots of dinos in and still have the list do things... at least IMHO.

Woodies - cool, but finesse list. Can do elite glass hammer really well. Can also get its ass handed to it doing elite glass hammer too.... very good shooting, and shooting will form the backbone of your lists.

Honestly from your descriptions, i might check out the End Times Host of the Eternity King from the End TImes: Khaine book that just released late last month. It allows you you mix and match all the non-special character choices from Dark Elves, High Elves, and Wood Elves, and that's going to very naturally make itself a very highly elite list compilation. It also blends 3 similar, yet subtly different aesthetics together for converting and painting fun.

Just... ya know... caution... its a special release ruleset, which means who knows if its an army that is going to even exist in future rulesets. Popular opinion is that HotEK is going to be how Elves are released for Fantasy going forward into the future, however, there is absolutely no way to know that for sure.

You want Wood Elves. Definitely. No bias here (that's a lie, I love Wood Elves).

Some Wood Elf models are upwards of twenty points per model, and heroes are never less than seventy. They're very hard hitting... but they do lack defence for the most part. The key to victory is avoiding being struck at all and taking the enemy down decisively.
