In a previous game, I charged my Furioso Librarian into a melee consisting of a Hive Tyrant and a scout sergeant, then I proceeded to challenge the hive tyrant with my scout, and since the hive tyrant is alone he had to accept.

Since the Furioso is armour 13 on front, the only chance the hive tyrant had to damage it would be to smash, and that would leave him at one attack, and since he was in a challenge, that attack would go against the scout.

So as far as we could tell, this caused the librarian to get in all his attacks against the hive tyrant without any risk of being damaged with the cost of loosing my scout sergeant.

Did we play this correctly? I think so, but it seemed a bit unfair towards the hive tyrant (who by the way was instant killed by the force weapon).

You aren't required to smash just because someone with AV13 is in the combat. But yes the Tyrant would have to allocate all of his attacks into the sergeant first and if he picked S6 he wouldn't be able to do anything to the Furioso and if he chose to smash there wouldn't be enough attacks to have hits allocate into the Furioso.

It's a drawback to having single model characters like MCs and such. The easy counter play to that is to charge another unit into the combat so that everyone outside the challenge has to swing into the other unit.

Also note even had the Dread been AV12 or even 10 he still would have been immune to the over flow wounds from the Flyrant.

Because Vehicles are uneffected by wounds (unless of course ypu believe Psychic shriek rolls to hit in which case as long as the HT just needs to cause 2 wounding hits to kill the Dread regardless of AV).
