Subject: New Player needs help deciding on a faction.

Hey Guys and Gals,
So I'm Switching from Warmachine to 40K and just need a bit of clarification on some of the stuff I've read online. For starters I'm a super casual player and have no real desire to play tournaments. That being said I do enjoy winning and would occasionally like to do so. So The faction I've been mulling over is Grey Knights. From everything I've read they got nerfed pretty thoroughly this edition. But I also read that they just got changed a whole lot. I love the look and Story of the Grey Knights, I play Menoth in Warmachine.
So my questions are:
1. Comparatively speaking in regards to all of the other factions are Grey Knights really that bad?
2. I read that GW is pushing for armies to have to ally with other groups, Can you play just a straight Grey Knight list and still have a decently reasonably/reliable chance of coming out on top. Because honestly that's really what I'd like to do.
3. If That's not a viable option, I really like the Space Wolves and I read that the flat out vanilla Space Marines are one of the better 7th edition armies. And both those armies are battle brothers. I also know there's a way to roll up a custom SM Chapter, from like one of the RPGs I think. So i'd probably do that. What are the pros and cons to both of these groups.
Thanks all,
CodenameDan

Honestly if you love the look and feel of Grey Knights, they are the way to go. Start with a HQ and some troops and go from there. Remember in 40k, Imperial forces ally perfectly together, so you can always add another SM force as allies.

The Grey Knights are a very thematic force and a good choice to start with. They are expensive, points wise, so cheap (relatively) to collect. The other bonus is that they are fairly easy to paint to a good standard.
Funnily enough, I'm moving away from 40k and starting on Warmachine. But I still play the odd 2nd ed game with a few like minded buddies.

Grey Knights are still a competitive army, even when you play without any kind of allies. But with grey knights you have that one single codex, besides the inquisition, with the least amount of variety. If you want to win you will stick to the same 3-5 different units every game, without much variety. If you are ok with allies, GKs are perfect, since they are a part of the "Imperium of Man" which means you can ally your GK with all the other IoM factions (around 5-8).

Awesome. Thanks a bunch guys. Fauk and Rippy, you guys mentioned that I'll stick with the same 3 to 5 units and to start with. Can you make any suggestions on which ones are generally good or more forgiving for a new player. for instance which ones are particularly more effective or for that matter more fun to play.

Librarian Lvl 3 in the HQ
Terminators in the standard section
3 Nemesis Dreadknights in Heavy Support equipped with personal teleporter thing.
From that on you can choose other units you may also like and put them into your list.
The problem with the models I mentioned above is, that they are the most used ones. So don“t expect your opponent to be happy, especially not about the 3 Nemesis Dreadknights, as they can be a really pain in the ass for most armies.

Grey Knights - Main Force
Expand to include Inquisition Detachment and add lots of new rules / abilities to increase complexity and learn more about the game
Expand further with assassins for additional funsies.
Before you know it, you'll have effectively rebuilt the old Grey Knights Codex

Thanks much. Another couple questions I had were:
1. I read that the Halberds and paladins became less useful in this codex. I mean the look really cool. Are they decent/fun to use choices that are not really worth it for the points compared to like terminators or purifiers? Or are they something to stay away from? More clearly from a having fun stand point how usable are they?
2. What's the deal with Dreadnoughts? On all the forums I've read everyone says that they're terrible. I know the Dreadknights are much better, but I have a friend who's a CSM player and he ran 2 dreadnoughts this weekend. So are they "bad" or just not as good as the used to be?
3. How are strike squads as a fun troop choice?

Halberds used to provide +2 Initiative, giving GKs the chance to swing their AP3 weapons before other power armor wearing foes and use that to swing combats in their favor. Now, those halberds look cool and let them hit a little harder, which means you don't have to rely on Hammerhand quite as much. Paladins suffer from being susceptible to huge volumes of small arms fire and don't have enough attacks for their points cost to really be dangerous.
2) Dreadnoughts aren't terrible, they're just overpriced for what they do, and no longer can have S8 autocannons. Dreadknights are just a much more effective use of your Heavy Support slots, though if you really want to put dreadnoughts into your army, they're not a completely terrible choice if you make a few choices to give them some synergy. Take 4 of them with 2 sets of twin-linked autocannons, stand them on top of a Skyshield Landing Pad, cast Sanctuary every round and blaze away protected by AV12 and a 3++ invulnerable saves.
3) Strikes never (pardon the pun) struck me as fun, but they are your cheapest Troops. I'd check out the Nemesis Strike formation since it only requires a single unit of Strikes and lets you fill your army with Dreadknights, Purifiers, Paladins, and all the fun stuff in the army.
