This is a thought exercise that started after my friend&I saw an awesomely painted Chaos Land Raider at our FLGS last week:

Let's say you really love the Land Raider model and want to include one in your army without handicapping yourself too much, how would you do it?

The best ideas I've had so far are:

Codex SM: LR Crusader with a 5 man squad of TH&SS Terminators but you're tying almost 500 points in a unit that needs to trundle across the battlefield to the other side to bring the pain. Also, SM don't really scream 'assault army' to me so how do you support the LR?

Grey Knights: Land Raider Crusader with terminators (with halberds or falchions maybe?). Force AP3 attacks with Hammerhand (S7) would compliment the anti-infantry focus of the Crusader quite well. Adfitionally, teleporting Dreadknights and easy access to Gate of Infinity makes supporting the LR much easier

Any othet ideas?

Darkangels running 3 venerable LRC with a bolter banner in the middle, supported by a techmarine/librarian on a bike with a PFG giving them all a 4++ save come to mind. Very tough tank wall and 72 TL bolter shots a turn.
Obviously this can be changed by removing landraiders and replacing them with ravenwing bikes.

Iron hand achilles landraider, especially with some kind of invulnerable save, is something that will almost never die.

The spartan assault tank deserves special mention, as it is basically an upgraded standard landraider. Chaos marines as best off running this imo.

A friend just traded me the sponson bits for a LR Prometheus recently. That would be 2x TL heavy bolters on each side. I had never heard of this tank before, but it's from IA2 (2nd edition) and gives bonuses to your reserve rolls as well as reducing enemy cover saves. It's not available to GK, but I can't wait for my next game to ally an Inquisitor inside this thing (as a DT!) and get ALL of my NSF terminator squads to land first turn!

Clearly this is more of a support role, so I don't know if that's what you had in mind. I see it almost like a force multiplier carrying another force multiplier inside. Maybe a level below an IC that makes certain units count as troops, but still useful. And 12x rerollable HB shots are not something that should be taken lightly.

You can do the Inquisition LRC with psy ammo, making those hurricane bolters S5 attacks.

Then you put an inquisitor with the liber heresius in there. Liber heresius allows you to pass a LD check and gain one of many special rules. One of the special rules is scout.

For the Inquisitor's squad toss a few crusaders in there, maybe a couple arco-flaggelants and a couple priests for the rerolling of failed armor/invul saves. and rerolling of failed to-hit/to-wound rolls.

So scout the LRC 12" up first turn, unload S5 hurricane bolters. then text turn assault and shred.

You can kit out the inquisitor however you want. probably make him a psyker though for extra fun.

And now that Blood Angels Sanguinary priest is an HQ. toss him in to the squad for FNP and +1 to WS.

This would probably be the cheapest way to maximize a Landraider as far as spending points on the passengers goes while still being effective.

A fun idea I came up with a year back or so was the following for CSM:

Land Raider- 3 Chaos Terminators
Land Raider- 3 Chaos Terminators
Vindicator- Daemonic Possession, Combi-Bolter, Siege Shield
Vindicator- Daemonic Possession, Combi-Bolter, Siege Shield
Vindicator- Daemonic Possession, Combi-Bolter, Siege Shield

So the Land Raiders are Dedicated Transports so they do not take up a Heavy Force Org slot. What we have now are three vindicators who will never stop firing as they:

1) Have Daemonic Possession and so can overcome shaken and stunned results
2) Have a combi-bolter so they ignore weapon destroyed half the time
3) Effectively ignore terrain with the shields
4) Will only take fire to their AV13 front side as they are sandwiched between the land raiders in a WALL OF ROLLING STEEL!

I would not mind seeing this list in action. It's certainly expensive, but it would be hard for something to deal with the wall.
