Ok, so I have wanted to start painting commission ( just as a side thing). How would the best way be to approach ? I would probably want to offer free painting service to the first few commissions to hopefully get a good name going( paid shipping). Nothing too big, just small squads at a time(or even just models).
What do you guys think?

We'll do you have any pictures of your work?? Are you only going to do table top or offer different stages of paint. I think first thing first before I can say anything else do have to see your work.

Yes, I will post pictures. But trust is the hardest thing to get no these days. So many bad apples out there. I honestly won't have stages of painting, just paint everything like it is my own, then send it off to the owner. A win for both parties.

I can suggest starting a blog here on Dakka to display your work, create a free blog of your own away from Dakka to display prices and anything else thats needed. If you work is good, people might give you a try.

Yeah, I figured that would be a start. There are a lot of great painters on here, I would love to accept any advice or constructitive criticism .

Post pictures. Many many pictures.
Get good at the work and good at the photography and work is easy to find.
I will say that if you want to make money off small batches, the standard has to be very very high; golden demon squad finalist level. Otherwise you just can't achieve the speed needed to get even a very low wage out of it; that means larger batches and efficiency through repetition.

I would also go local first so you get a taste of what it is
Like. I to wanted to do commission work, once I started to
Just do local I changed my mind in two months. Just be ready for the good and the bad, not every one will be a fan of your work.

If you're going to do a business - any business, here's my advice to you:
Don't figure, don't think, act.
Thinking is near useless with regard to actually achieving results. As is forum posting without an intent.

I'll second SheSpits - starting local cuts down on shipping logistics, can help ease trust issues and communication (if you see each other regularly at the game store, for example, you're less likely to try and scam someone or forget a project - they know where to find you and vice versa), and gives you a limited but very accessible pool of potential clients.
If you have a local shop, you may even be able to pop some sample work and contact info in a display case as advertising. I've even heard of people painting on consignment, instead of commission - the store maintains a display case of painted models for sale in exchange for a cut of the profits. Such a system (similar to selling on Ebay) works out nicely for "hobby for money" painters who either can't or won't handle the particular issues that come with straight commission work, but still want to sell their work.
