I have this idea in my head but not sure how to go about it. I have a mawloc (or whatever variation its called) and i want the base to look like it was hiding undeground and has then exploded upwards out of the ground to attack.

I'm not sure if it should look like a crater exploding outwards, or, in fact how it *should* look if something exploded out of the ground. I considered getting a premade crater and sticking the mawloc in that, but it doesnt seem right to me.

this will be a display model so theres no concerns over sizes. I f anyone has any ideas, or has seen somehting similar i'd be happy to hear any suggetsions

Realistic looking will depend on what is being modeled. An alluvium substrate would have little change at all in terms of a crater or other disturbance. Maybe a bit of a mole trail...but, the soil will largely settle back down to fill the voids created. This would include most you sands, snows, silts and other loose landscapes.

If it is rock, the fracturing will compress the surrounding material and depending on the depth of the upwards trajectory - it will create either a crater (from deep attacks) or a retarc (from shallower attacks). The shallow attacks would have no where for the fractured material to go to, so a mound would form around the opening. Deep attacks though would create a void that would fill in quickly and create the typical crater appearance.

More energetic attacks coming up through something like a manmade surface (pavement for example) might create the result of the dirt (no crater) with fractured materials scattered around the surface - a bit like shooting glass.

Granted, if you are just looking for the rule of cool and don't want to put that much effort into it. Grab a copy of Tremors and a beer or two and just sort of go with it.

That's perfect! ! Was thinking though of the ground being like a hard Sandy surface, kinda like a really dry desert

Sean- heaps of good info there too for me to think about!
