It finally happened. In the past, I've had some crazy grenades scattering well outside of the 8 inch range, but I finally had a guy kill himself with a frag. A space marine, the most elite fighting unit in the galaxy, dropped a frag to his feet when he was trying to throw it (scattered the full 8 back towards him). I continue to feel that 2d6 scatter on grenades is a bit insane, especially for a marine. Somehow it is possible to throw a grenade further than you can fire a pistol, and at the same time it's possible to drop it to your feet.... things that honestly should not happen, especially to a space marine.

I feel that grenade scatter should be limited to a single d6 minus BS. A maximum of 2 inch scatter on a weapon with a max range of 8 seems more reasonable than the current setup. With missiles and such it does make a lot more sense that you can get crazy scatter, a missile flies in a line until it hits something, meaning if tilted slightly too high it with travel significantly further or shorter. With a frag, there is an arc, and once it reaches the bottom of said arc it stops, except for some slight bouncing. I'm just tired of throwing frags that land nowhere close to what you were aiming at (to the point that I almost never use them).

Anyone else tired of this, or am I just whining?

I think a bit of imagination is required for this. When it scatters, it's not solely the thrower's skill that's being represented. The grenade might bounce off an obstacle, detonate prematurely or even fall out the thrower's hand after taking a glancing blow. Either way, they seem fine at the moment.

Strong breezes. VERY strong breezes.

The problem with D6 scatter is some people get pinpoint grenades.

Just make it d6" scatter. No reduction by bs. Apply it to demo charges and you've got a deal. Demo charges are too expensive and inaccurate.

He just got a nade kicked back at him.

But yep, just a d6 without ballistic skill reduction (like dropping bombz) would be reasonable.

I think a better way to fix this would be a global change to how blasts work. Blasts should have an upper limit to how far they can scatter based on range, specifically I think a blast should never be able to scatter further than half the distance from the firer to the target (rounding up).
This would help the grenade problem as well as stops things like LRBT from firing at things that are a point blank range and somehow hitting behind the tank.

What about a d6 with a reduction of half BS, rounding down? It'd only be an inch or two of difference, but sometimes that's all you need. I'd just like a Space Marine or Aspect Warrior to be better at throwing a grenade than an Ork, even if it's only slightly so.

NL_Cirrus: that's not actually a bad idea. It'd mean that a tank could drive up and shoot something at near point blank range, which is awesome.

If you're reducing the scatter to D6 there is no need to have any sort of BS modifier it would just make grenades too accurate.
