Well I've been noodling around how to use Tervigon in a competitive list, and this is my notes that I have jotted down so far...

HQ: Winged Dakka'rant, Electro 240
HQ: Winged Dakka'rant, Electro 240
HQ: Tervigon, Thorax Hive: Electro 205

Troops: Hormagaunt Brood, x15 75
Troops: Hormagaunt Brood, x15 75
Troops: Warrior Brood, x3 (Strangle Cannon) 100

Elite: Venothrope
Elite: Veno
Elite: Zoey Brood, x2 100

Heavy: Dakkafex 150
Heavy: Tyranofex,Thorax Hive: Electro, Adrenal (or a second Dakkfex, save 50 points)
Heavy: Mawloc

Toss on Fighter Ace, and Old adversary for your Warlord...Add a Tyrannocyte for a MC Deepstrike, and that is 1740 I believe. (I plan on DS for the Tervigon)

I'm not totally married to this list as of yet. I tend to run a pair of "Bugstars" on foot, and try to toss as many backfield threats down range as I can. I am pretty happy with the results.

This list would be a lot stronger with two Malanthropes to replace the 3 Elites, but I don't have any. I always have tremendous results from Tyrano, but I am considering turning her into a second Dakkafex for harmony.I normally run a Tyrano, and two Mawlocs for my Heavies, but I'd like to "upgrade" to a Dakkafex (or two)

One thing that has been suggested is Crushing Claws for the Tervigon, I have most of the points available, and I can drop a Hormie for the last 5... But I don't have it modelled that way...

I feel your pain on the lack of malanthropes... I do not have one either despite me wanting one. Anyways, what are your plans for the hormagaunts and warriors? They are the ones that I can see being the most ambiguous in your list. Knowing your intentions for them would be helpful.

This list looks similar to the one you've been providing input for of my own.

My basic strategy is to build "Bugstars" of a Big Bug, a Veno, a Synapse source, and a screen of Hormagaunts. I have found that all the fire tend to go at the big scarey MC, leaving the Hormagaunts fairly intact when they reach charge range. They can "tar pit" until the Big Bug is ready to join the party. The screen gives a cover save, and the shrouding raises it to 3+...so the Big Bug tends to arrive in fair to good condition as well.

I use Hormies for their speed, the worst thing that a screen can do is blow a run roll and slow down the Big Bug. With the extra +3 move it just does not come up. And seeing as the Hormies are there to take the Overwatch, they may as well be good at the CC.

I'm guessing that a third Tyrant would be the most "killy" build, but I'd like to see if I can make Tervigon a "usable" unit again.

Ah ok, so one "bugstar" gets the zoeys and one gets the Warriors. That makes sense. That's actually exactly how I use my hormagaunts. I like them too much not to have them, but they definitely aren't good enough on their own. I say if you are trying to make a list for a tervigon, you're basically there. I think it's cool you want a list that remains competitive without just piling as many flyrants into an army as possible. We tyranids have options!

Yeah, here out west, Tervigon spawn do not get "OS" in tourneys, So Leviathan looked good as it does not give Objective Secured any way.

I wouldnt downplay a unit that spawns new units every turn, objective secured or not. They can still claim objectives, block enemy movement, and at the very least draw some enemy fire away from your bugstars. If only they made a hormagaunt spawner instead of termies...
