So I'm trying to start an Ork army for the first time. I want to keep it at 1,000 points because I'm not made of money. I recently bought the Jericho Reach box with a Space Wolf friend, so I've got 5 nobs, a warboss, 10 grots, and 3 killa kans. My opponents consist of beakies, Space Wolves, Chaos, Dark panzee, panzee, tin'eads and Tyranids. So pretty much everything but fish'ead and Guard lol. Here's the list I cooked up since I'm seeing that boys really aren't all that great anymore:
My overall strategy was basically to have a pincer attack with the Dread/Kan mob heading straight at the enemy and drawing fire, while the bikes and Trukk boys race up to get stuck in and crack heads. Meanwhile the Mek Gunz drop plasma death from behind and I have the Gretchin to either screen them or snag a nearby objective. Any thoughts from those of you with bigger Teef would be much appreciated! Cheers!

Nob bikers aren't bad, and they do keep the £ (err..$) cost down.
But consider normal Warbikers instead. For the same points (220) you can get 10 Warbikes, with Boss Nob with PK and BP.
That's 30 Str5 twin-linked shots (versus your 12).
On the charge, 36 Str4 hits, 4Str9 hits, 9 Str3 hits and 1 Str4 hit (compared to 16 Str7 hits and 4 Str4 hits).
And 11 wounds to soak up, compared to 8. Same saves.
anyway, you wanna put atleast one powerclaw in the nobmob.
the attacksquig is kinda retundant if you already got the lukky stikk...
the dread works best with two skorchaz. u'll wanna bring him in CC as soon as possible, so you should run him every turn anyway. and i generally prefer extra armour to riggers... the chance of regaining a hullpoint is pretty slim, but ignioring crew stunned is a pretty big deal
and as far as the trukk boyz go... if you are dependent on em, always get a mek to soak up challenges
Spoiler:
HQ: • Warboss - PK, Bike, Bosspole, Lucky Stikk 140pts
Mek 15pts
ELITES: • 4x Nobs - Bikes, 3x Big Choppas, PK, Bp - 225pts
Thanks for the replies guys. I actually didn't even think of regular bikers, but that makes way more sense in terms of the damage output potential. I like the list tweaks you made RedNoak, but why the Mek for challenges?

Yea, go Warbikerz instead of Nob Bikerz for the points limit. As you get into bigger games, start considering the Nobs. I prefer double skorcha and 2 CCW on the Deff Dread, and if you are doing the Kan wall, get more Kanz! I love Kan walls, they are really fun to play around with. Finally, i would either go full Gretchin or full Boyz, not a mixture.
If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

if you like kanz, play em... but keep in mind, they' re not as effective as other units in the codex.
as for using meks in challenges:
nobz with powerclaws are terrible in a challenge. the powerclaw will always strike last and a nob only has a 6+ save, meaning that any decent character will kill him before he can strike back.
allthough, if you got a mek in the same unit , he can take the challenge (and properly die in the process) enableing the nob to get his attacks.
this super secret awesomobot technique will cost you a whooping 8-9 points, since the mek will replace a normal boy
Nice, what would you recommend instead of kans? I'm pretty much open to any list suggestions as I know the codex is weak as is, I'd like to stomp more ass than get beat ideally.

maybe ork list building isnt as easy as with other armies but if you play with some tactical finesse, orks can be pretty devastating
the thing is... i dont like telling people what to field. everyone should play an army he likes and take those kind of units he will have fun with. there isnt THE ONE orklist i could post, only suggetions on what could work or wouldnt work.
that said, if you wanna play on a really competitive level, kans generally arent the best choice
@your list
its pretty solid as a base, for tweaks. i personally think the first one was better (exept the nobbikers)
you maybe wanna eas' off the kustom kannons. at 1000 points a 2+ armour save isnt that much of a dealbreaker, especially with all your dreads, kans and powerclaws.
you could also try and swap out the trukkmob with regular shootaboyz and see what fits you better...
as further additions to your army (going for 1500 points) consider more boyz/trukks, Manz, tankbustaz and/or lootaz

10 stormboyz will not do you any good... they're fast but still have a normal boy profile... at higher points you can use small stormboy mobs as distraction units but i think the trukkboyz will do better.
i would go with this list, its got your own flair and is pretty solid.

True, I like it man. Plus I can screen the bikes with the Trukk boys. Thanks for the help!
