Going through the new codex, it seems we have two troops choices, tactical squads and scouts. Many players will take the bare minimum of troop choices to field their old death company, sanguinary guard and veterans and because if this if seen a bit of rage over having to take an obligatory "troop tax" but all things considered I think we just received one of the best close combat troops for their points.
Every model in the blood angels army has furious charge and in the new formation; Baal strike force, we also get +1 initiative on the charge (basically 5th edition fc) so that means that scouts with close combat weapons have 3 strength 5 attacks at a higher initiative than most troops in the game. Couple that with a sang priest and teleport homer a you have an amazing harass unit that can guarantee terminator squads a safe landing.
I imagine they would be used with a camo cloak and infiltrated as close as possible to the opponents front line, camp them turn one and charge turn two if possible to give your deep strike units a safer landing by tying up some of their shooting units.

That's what I am doing, I am even putting a Power Weapon on the Sgt.
Can you imagine the look on the face of some CC-Sgt when he gets challenged and killed by a scout?
One thing though: A Priest is great, but you can't infiltrate with those.
And 5 more Scouts is a cheaper than a Priest!

Yeah, they look great. 5 with a Power Sword for 70 points will be a really sharp little unit that can actually threaten most small units.

You could really hurt opponents with a scout rush. 660pts for 60 of them. Box them in for pod deployed squads to do the dirty.
Our scouts (with special detachment) are leagues ahead of vanilla scouts when it comes to assault.
And if you lose a squad or two - whoop de doo, all us BA players are experienced enough to lose a 110-125pt unit... as realistically they were our cheapest units avaliable up until this dex.

Yeah, 5 scouts with a PSword will murder your opponent's 5 tacticals he left camped on a backfield objective.
I wouldn't call them leap and bounds better than regular because they lack the LSS, which would add a lot of mobility plus Blind for hitting things on a 3+ even with WS3.

That is a good point. It's a pity we didn't get access to LSS's.

Yeah. Then the scouts would have had the same mobility as the jump troops and been awesome. I still think they are good. There's not another 70 point unit that can infiltrate and scout that is as scary if left unmolested as the 5 scouts with PW.
I had been planning to build some LSS + Scouts with melta bomb for just a regular SM army with the idea that they could wreck some vehicle hiding in the back field with grenades and the bomb. BA scouts can do that better and handle non-vehicles left back there, but lack the mobility to chase things down if they run away. So it's a tradeoff. Actually, it might be interesting to build a list with SM allies where the LSS blind the things the BA scouts will charge and the normal SM scouts, charge vehicles and camp objectives in the enemy back field after the BA scouts steal their rides because Fast vehicles should belong to BA.

Scouts are pretty decent as a troop tax in a CAD, or as an MSU option that won't break the bank. They have great mobility, and with camo cloaks they can hunker down in terrain and just not die. I would keep them away from combat - even with FC, they're just not very good in close combat for their price.

The lack of the Land Speeder Storm REALLY hurts these guys. That is the only thing that Vanilla Scouts have on them. There has to be some way you can get them an assault transport. But, the ability to Scout and Infiltrate makes it possible for you to get them in CC turn one. It is pretty funny that people have been bitching about having to buy Scout squads when they actually look strangely brutal. I know I am going to pick up at least one squad.

BA Scouts are one of the most underrated choices for this new dex. People have been gushing about DC and bitching about ASM, and yet they keep ignoring these guys. 55 points for five guys that are S5 and I5 on the charge? And can infiltrate. Even your opponent is gonna underestimate them.
Until they get the first charge...

To be fair... my biggest complaint about the codex is the lack of the Landspeeder Storm.

Can you imagine having an open-topped vehicle spitting out S5, I5 murder machines? A BP/ CCW Scout Squad with an LSS costs 100 pts. That is pretty cheap for what you get.

Just wait until SMs get redone and then LSSs will be a fast attack you can just ally

Yes, but as a non-dedicated transport, they can't infitrate in it. I mean I guess they can scout turn 1, move 12", flat out 24" achieve a similar effect, but I'm sure at some point it won't be quite the same.

With plus 1 to Initiative they're in some ways better than them now.
My God do CSM need a new Dex and soon...
