So long story short my FLGS is starting up a Warhammer fantasy slow grow league in January. And while I would like to play I paint slow and I have a hard time painting the same model over and over again. Also I just kinda wanna paint big arse monsters.

So I'm looking for an army I can play that is more or less 5 giant monsters, and maybe a 10man command group.
That being said I heard you can do this with Lizardmen or Warriors of Chaos. So I did a little research but mostly I just found lists with like 100 infantry in 25man groups and then 1-2 monsters. So I'm hoping y'all can point me in the right direction and maybe give me a couple good ideas for lists.

Warriors of Chaos are probably more up your alley than Lizardmen. The bonus for Warriors is that while you will have to paint up some rank and file for your Core requirement, Warriors of Chaos are quite expensive so you'll only have a few of them. The entire rest of your points can easily be spent on monsters if you want. You can fill up your minimum Core requirement at 1000 points with a single 12-man box of Warriors of Chaos, or with 2 Chaos Chariots with Mark of Nurgle.

Lizardmen will need rank and file to fill up the Core requirement and you will usually need to paint double the number of models as Warriors. However, they have a ton of big monsters to spend the rest of your points on. 20 Saurus will fill Core at 1000 points, as opposed to 12 Warriors, so it's up to what you think you could stand painting in terms of rank and file.

Basically every 1000 points you increase you'll need to paint up another 12 Warriors (or 2 Chariots) or 20 Saurus depending on which army you pick. Both have monsters available in Characters, Specials, and Rares so it's only the core you have to worry about.

Well with WoC, you can take Throgg, who lets you take trolls as core, so you can have a core of Monstrous Infantry, and then fill the special and rare slots with monsters. And obviously, you can do this with Ogres anyway, without a special character.

Any other army, you'll have to take 25% of your points worth of Infantry. So for Lizardmen, you could have an old blood and scar vet on Carnosaurs, saurus warriors or skinks, and then Bastilodons, Stegadons in special, and Ancient steps in rare (there's also Troglodons, but they're a more sub par choice. I'm gonna use one though because that's how I built my 50 quid kit, and he's such a cool model).

Also with Warriors as well you can take a mix of chariots and marauder horsemen as core and then take monsters in special and rare as well as characters and have literally no rank and file at all, but it won't necessarily be the best army.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'ma take look at Warriors.
But before I go are there any other armys that do the whole 10 model infantry unit + beasts better than Warriors or Lizardmen?
Not counting Ogres (we've 3 guys playing Ogres all ready and no one playing WoC or Lizards)

Actually, now that I think about it, Undead Legions can do something like the list you want pretty easily.

They can take a huge pimpin' unit of chariots as core, stick characters on chariots and put them into the unit, and then in specials and rares they can take some really good monsters (terrorgheists and khemrian warsphinges spring to mind immediately). You would have to keep in mind ofc, that being undead they aren't necessarily the best list to learn the game with, and you have trouble protecting wizards with it, but it could be fun.

The only thing is, if you are deadset on taking an infantry unit that is just 10 dudes with command, you may as well not take them at all, and there are few armies, if any that can do that at all (let alone well).

Dwarfs don't have monsters though so aren't really what OP is looking for.

Daemons of Chaos.

You can get away readily with taking a Herald of Tzeentch + 2x 10-strong units of Horrors w/full command for Core. Then spend the rest of your pts on monstrous units such as Beasts of Nurgle, Bloodcrushers, Plaguedrones, etc... and/or mix in the bigger stuff such as a Soul Grinder and the Khannon/Burning Chariot.

Granted certain units like Bloodcrushers are rather lackluster, (despite how cool they look!), but despite the utter dysfunction of the army book, DoC can be pretty mean. (except vs. Elves - especially High Elves and their stupid banner.)

On the plus-plus side of things, you also get to build up a fully viable 40k army at the same time!

Daemons have a steep curve for a first army. I'd say lizardmen. They have cool army with monsters.
