Hey everybody, I'm thinking about getting into 40k after finishing up painting the various boardgames I have. I'm definitely decided on Tyranids, and more specifically a monster mash list (i.e. all monstrous creatures).
Being new, and not yet having read the rules, I wanted to see if I can get some input from the community on a 2,000 point Tyranid monstrous creatures list. My criteria are as follows.
1. I wouldn't ever play tournaments and am more of a fluffy gamer but ideally it would be a decent 'take all comers' list focusing on variety.
2. No model spam, to the point that I'd like NO repeat models (except for maybe the carnifaxes as I understand you can have multiples of those while still taking up one heavy slot)
3. The only small models I would want to bother with would be some termagaunts (and only to enable a tervigon as a troop choice).
So there's your challenge, and thanks for the input!

I love my big bugs - that's why I got into Tyranids.
I have a few list I've titled this name actually - though I do have a few repeats in these list because one is scary, two is better. I normally don't take more than two of anything though. Also I have one "unbound" monster mash list - but I have only taken it once in a larger game where my allied Tyranid player was bringing only small bugs - it was an amazingly fun game for both teams!
This was the list I took for that game I have an alternate version that uses more flyers but I wanted to go all ground to make it more fluffy and to better support my ally with ground support.
Monster Mash - Unbound
Monster Mash - Bound
Monster Mash Alt - Bound
I realize these all have a few duplicates in the list but there is a good reason for that and that is that if you only ever bring one of anything it's not too difficult for your opponent to single those units out and bring them down - so I like bringing and suggesting that you bring at least two of a particular unit. Hope this at least gives you a few ideas!

We have so many options that you can basically just pick and choose. Starting with the basics though, you need a hive tyrant and then 30 termagants and a tervigon to fill out your compulsory slots. Most people will run the tyrant with wings, 2 sets of twin linked devourers, and electroshock grubs. If you want no duplicates whatsoever, its gonna be tough because we have lots of monsters, but most are in our heavy slots. There is the haruspex in elites which helps alleviate this. It has its faults but I run one often simply for the fact that it is a monstrous creature that doesn't take from my heavy slots. You can get one crone and one harpy for fast attacks. Then for heavies, you have choices to make. I'd go with a brood of three carnfexes because they are strong, will help fill out points, and you can outfit them all with either 2 twin-linked devourers or keep them with their scything talons and give them adrenal glands, depending on whether you want them shooty or choppy. A tyrannofex may be a good choice for you as well as an exocrine for ranged firepower, though a toxicrene could be good too. Really, its up to what models you like.

Flying Hive Tyrant with 2x Devourers - Best unit in codex you probably want 2.
Carnifex with 2x Devourers - Solid choice, you'll probably want at least 1. Even better when in the new Tyrranocyte drop pod creature.
Dimacheron - Close Combat monstrosity from Forge World. Also greatly benefits from Tyrranocyte transport.
Hive Crone - another solid Flying Monstrous Creature. Good Anti Tank/Anti Air with its haywire missiles.
Also check here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/572843.page It's got a lot of great info on units and strategies for Tyranids. I believe the community did write ups and report cards for just about every 'Nid unit in the game as well.

Well, since I have been playing a highlander tyranid list (ironically also titled "Monster Mash") for a while now, I shall point you to that thread!
