Long time Blood Angel player, and I've never had access to, or used any GRAV weapons. I'm considering adding some pistols to start; what has been your experiences with them?

If I recall correctly Blood Angels also have empty Drop Pods in their FA slot.
Put some Allied Detachment Grav Centurions in there and drop it next to a unit and you have this ability called "please put that unit back in the foam as they are now deleted."
Pistols I don´t find of much use. Gravguns on bikers/bike command squads have served me well, as Relentless makes them useful.

Grav guns dont work too well on non relentless infantry as you will be shooting at 9" if you move. And most things that you will shoot a grav at will just as likely die to plasma on 2s as well. exceptions being the various not imperial knights as those get wounded on 3 or worse with plasmas. a few shots with the grav is also not really that worth it against vehicles though you can clutch an immoblize on occasion. Centurions though are a different as they with there amps will generally wreck anything including vehicles. but that also includes there chest weapons.

In all honesty you'd be better allying in ba if you're gonna ally. SM is a better codex by far.

As above, Grav Centurions or Grav on bikes are the best bet. On foot troops, its wasted. Also, in all of the battles I've seen, never seen anyone use a Grav pistol. That should tell you about it

If you are the kind of person who pays the 15 points for a plasma pistol, grav pistols are a nice parallel choice. (Full discloser: I’m not one of those people) They are just as good against most targets, and don’t get hot. They are also concussive, so you can pair one with a non-specialist unwieldy weapon (mostly a power axe) for the extra CC attack and have your target strike at the same time as you.

Pistols: No.
Guns: On Bikes, sometimes. Graviton guns on Bikes are an equal but different option than Plasma Guns on Bikes. They're both good options, but for different targets.
Cannons: Yes, since these only come on Centurions, which are Relentless.
On foot, I would always rather have a Plasma Gun than a Graviton Gun for non-Relentless wielders.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Wouldn't a a grav pistol be a OK alternative for a plasma pistol? It is not quite as effective against some foes, but still AP2 and cannot fry the wielder.

Actually completely forging about it.
Plasma pistols might be an excellent choice for something like a librarian with a force axe.
Being able to wound a MC (generally 3+ armor saves or better)
Then chagrining in for a attempt at force murder at the same initiative might seem very useful.

So the general consensus seems to be: if you are Unwieldy or Relentless it's worth it, otherwise definitely not.
Thanks folks. ;-)

I don't even go near Grav/Plasma pistols. Too expensive for a 12" range.
They seem useful on paper, but I prefer Plasma Guns all around. And against horde armies who have no armour, they're suddenly wasted points (IIRC they wound based on AS?)
