I called Fantasy flight themselves to ask them quiet a lot of questions about their tournament play. The one I forgot though, Is this: Is it normal for stores to Charge a entry fee for Tournaments? FF supplies the prizes (which the stores buy for 20$ each kit) And our local store is going to start charging for Star wars Tournaments. Just wanting to know what the Norm is for this at other stores.

Our shops here charge about £5 for tournaments, these packs come with 20 cards for prizes, so its well worth shops organising tournaments.

Our FLDS charges a small fee for tourneys. But that money comes back to us as store credit for the top placers in addition to the prize pack swag.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

I wish that would Happen. Our store..it's like trying to slap a rattlesnake without getting bit to try and get prize support for any table top game . Our Warhammer group died because of it, and now that X-wing is booming Im afraid the owner will let this one die as well. Don't get me wrong, YES you need to put money in your local store to keep it going. But We can't get nothing going. Magic is main priority, and has even taken away our open game nights now. Love the store and our group deeply and trying to keep everyone pumped to stay around and play. I was hoping the owner wouldn't mind getting enough tourney kits to last the year, and not charge us. he's going to make about a 200$ profit over the year with what he wants to do..and were not getting any extra prizes, only what comes in the kit. (which im fine with..I just don't see it right to charge us) Anyhow, thanks for the input guys, I just wanted to know if it was normal for This game to have buy in's when the kits were the prizes.

Sounds like there a more issues with the store involved here than just paying for the tournament (Magic is always going to be the main priority for almost every gaming store in the world, but you should at least get one night a week and/or part of the store you can use for tabletop games). In itself I have no issue whatsoever paying an entry fee for an organised tournament event with prize support - in fact I would be incredibly surprised to find a tournament with free entry which was giving out prizes. Having gotten used to $30-60 entry for 40k tournaments (admittedly these are for big two day events) for me its generally a given that if you have a larger scale event which is using commercial space (i.e. part of a store, or hiring a hall) then there will be an entry fee.

If the issue is that he is clearly gouging you for entry fees then that's different, if they are trying to charge $30+ for a 8 person event and none of it is coming back as prizes then you should be boycotting that pretty hard. There continue to be problems and you can't just easily go to another store then I would suggest talking with the store owner - make it clear that you aren't keen on paying that much for a small tournament and that you will take your business elsewhere if it continues.
