Okay I know proxying is a way of life with war-gaming. Quite a few people can say at one point they had an army made of miniatures from another game or just a units base.

However what is the most extreme and or funniest case of this you have ever seen ? I'm talking about Quarters standing in for troops, soda-can drop-pods and the like. Since 6th and 7th edition I have seen a lot of proxying and I know there are some interesting cases out there.

Played against the most annoying guy at my club a 17 year old. He always talks about how orks are the greatest thing ever and everyone's army sucks compared to them. He also never bring a a rulebook but finds money for a new army every time I play him. The first game I played against him It was orks with daemons. The only legal models he ran were blood thirster and blood letters. He brought the thing that spawns more daemons which according to him allows him to have the daemons assualt from deep strike. He proxied his bikers as khorne blood crushers even though they aren't the same size and since I didn't know that I would hate him I let him borrow my baal predator to be a looted wagon. Shenanigans came like him having a large blast lascannon, assualt after deep striking, and acting his gliding monstrous creature is like a flying monstrous creature. At the end of the game I called and he stated talking about how the space marine would never surrender to the blood orks. Next game it was nids using halo grunts as gaunts and a Godzilla tervigon and then dark angels game where he thought that he could have four hqs and all of them was his warlord. Also he calls me a TFG whenever I put more than three building in the game. I want to punch him in the face so badly sometimes yet I want to beat him in a 40k game.

I have played against a ig player that only used coins for troops and peices of paper to mark as vehicles. I my self use soda cans for drop pods all the time.

Never seen it as bad as coins and paper, although i have heard of the coke bottle drop pods etc.
In my group we're normally fine with some proxies though- dreadnaughts as warwalkers, sometimes someone might use just the legs of killa kanz on a base, or just the flier stand as whatever.
Last week, we even proxied a small dark eldar army as eldar (im not sure why we even have it, we didn't even have the 4th edition codex). We just used warriors as dire avengers and guardians, some old metal thing as a farseer, raider as wave serpent. I don't mind things like that in friendly games, although do prefer 'real' armies.

In a competitive setting it is a little different though...
It wasn't so much proxying, but at a tourny, back in 5th edition, which me and my mates had driven an hour to get to, you'd like to expect your opponent to have some idea what he's doing there.
One of my friends got put against this kid who was about 12, which would have been fine, if he had brought more than about 7 tactical marines, and an eldar farseer, and had some concept of these so called 'rules', or even what army he's playing. After we tried to politely tell him, he doesn't have enough for an army, his watching mum hands him £20, and we suggest he buys a tactical squad or something to make up some points. He then returns with some dark eldar warriors, to which i think all of use facepalmed inside, and sits down to start building them. At this point, I had to return to my game, as we had a 50min time limit anyway, and so didn't see how the TO resolved it.

I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

When doing an 8k battle my mate didn't have enough points so we cut out polystyrene in the same size as wave serpents. After an hour, I looked at the 6, extra 'serpents' we had made, all in gunline next to each other, and couldn't stop laughing. It. Looked. Ridiculous! We have agreed to only proxy 40k modles in future (the one exception being pint glass drop pods as I only own 3). Wouldn't even have dreamed attempting the polystyrenegate affair with most opponents mind.

I think my favourite/funniest one I've seen was a clear base standing in for a C'tan shard. We decided that, seeing as this thing could warp reality in any way it wanted, it being invisible was hardly a great stretch. So we just got on with it.
