The proper deployment of reinforcements and reserves is a key piece of battlefield strategy. In 40k we've got a kind of haphazard reserves system with reinforcements coming on to the board piecemeal. I understand that the timing of availability is limited based on how long it takes them to respond and get to the battlefield. But a good commander will hold them in reserve until the key moment.

My proposed change, once you've successfully made a reserve roll for a given unit you may hold that unit in reserves and deploy it at the start of any turn of your choice.

I often have one sentinel come on turn 2, scions DS on turn 3, and my other sentinel on turn 4. It'd be much more useful for all of them to come in a wave on turn 3 or 4. So I'd like the choice to hold units back until I have enough reinforcements to make a difference.

This is why a lot of armies possess the ability to manipulate reserves. Its still random, but it improves the odds of a group arrival.

There's a reason you can't hold units in reserve.

If you could, Eldar would hold all their units in reserve, save a few, and then turbo-boost on to objectives last turn. Denying their opponents the chance to shoot them off the board.

What if you were required to bring everything on turn 4?

That would actually make units that have to be held in reserves more powerful as well as making units that force rerolls of reserves less so.

You could also use it to coordinate a Turn 4 Alpha-strike with a bunch of Deep Strike units.

Unreliabilty is an integral balancing factor of reserves and deep striking units.

Also a lot of tournaments are ending games Turn 6 instead of Random Game Length, so forcing Units to come on turn 4, doesn't balance it much.

Krieg! What a hole...

Pray for warlords traits I guess, the Scions get a pretty awesome one if you roll a 4.
