Infiltrating Broodlord

Hey all, guess I should introduce myself since I've already been posting all over these forums trying out my ideas and wanting to get advice.
Me and the family picked up the X-wing miniatures core set at Barnes and Noble and after playing just a couple games we were hooked. It's quick and easy to set up and learn and loads of fun for serious and casual players alike. We immediately decided we needed to get more space ships.
So with no consultation on what to get/what not to get, we dove in and bought two of the most iconic ships in the game, the Millennium Falcon and the Slave I. I went ahead and grabbed the HWK-290 because I recognized it as Kyle Katarn's ship, the Moldy Crow from Star Wars Jedi Knight. And we picked out the TIE defender too to keep it kind of even between the two factions and because dang it looked cool.
After looking online, I'm pretty psyched for the Scum and Villainy release, to get new cards for the HWK and the Firespray as well as two Black Sun/pirate Z95s and the alternate paint scheme Y-wing. I recognize the Scyk from Star Wars Galaxies as well so i definitely want to get one or more of those. The StarViper and IG2000 are pretty neat-o as well so I might buy one of each.
With all this said I'm starting to see a plan developing here. I'm a much more serious gamer than my main opponent, my dad, and so I would be interested in bringing a fleet to X-wing events/weekly games at the FLGS and the closest Kessel Run tournament available so i could bring the scum to play there, and expand the TIE and Variable-wing fleets so we can continue to play Imperials V Rebels at home.
Is this a sound plan of action or am I off my rocker?

Buy everything. Seriously. Each ship comes with unique upgrades, and half the fun is in mixing/matching upgrades to create new combos. On that note, you are off to a good start with the TIE-Defender, which comes with one of the best cards in the game (predator).
Other than that, getting two starter sets would be good, especially as it sounds like you are buying for multiple people (this gets you extra templates and damage decks for convenience), and it is also fairly common to roll 4+ dice, and is a cheap way to get more ships. In spite of this, also getting the expansions for those ships is good, as they come with some excellent pilots.
Finally, buy what you want. The HWK and TIE Advanced are the closest you come to bad choices, but both can be made to work (and the TIE Advanced has a big "watch this space" sign on it right now). The Lambda also has issues, but as it was featured in the list of the winner of a big tourney (either worlds or nationals, I forget), it's merits are under review. Just, if you want to fly A-wings, get the blister and Rebel Aces box (which contains the patch).
May the force be with you.

Thanks for the suggestions! Right now I'm really itching to play some games. I'm going to teach my friend to play in some quick start games, like the core set recommends.
As a general question are people in your area (i know mine will be different but it helps to have precedent) amenable to "proxy" upgrade cards? I'm sure you can buy them online for cheap, but I might want to try printing some off to mix and match and try new combos. I was thinking of trying the Firespray (Krassis probably for his reroll) with Darth Vader crew (Lambda only) with Cluster Missiles (A-wing/TIE Advanced) and Captain Jonus nearby in his Bomber for rerolls and unavoidable criticals but buying those sets just for the cards (when I really don't want to play the Lambda anyway) seems like an expensive mistake. In official events do you have to have the real cards?
More specifically, after I teach my friend to play, especially if he doesn't get that into it, I'm going to check the FLGS and Games Club to see if anyone wants to play or learn to play. I was wondering if I should bring Rebels or Imperials. Ill probably take both with me and pick the opposite of the other player, but I also want to bring the stronger list so I don't get crushed.
Here's two lists that I whipped up with just what I have
Rebels:
Luke Skywalker
-R2-F2
-stealth device
-elusiveness
Kyle Katarn
-Recon Specialist
-Moldy Crow
-Blaster Turret
Outer Rim Smuggler (YT-1300)
-Millennium Falcon
-Gunner
Imperials:
Colonel Vessery
Bounty Hunter (Firespray 31)
-weapons engineer
Academy Pilot
Black Squadron Pilot
-predator
They should both total 100 points but I have no idea which really is stronger because I haven't played them against each other or anyone else. If someone with more experience could help, I'd really appreciate it.

A second starter set is good because of the extra tie fighters and more importantly the rulers, although there are plenty of places to get after market (better, longer lasting) plastic sets. I would also recommend getting an X-Wing pack and a Tie fighter pack as they have some great cards in too, and you'll have a 5 tie swarm to get you going and three X wings aren't to be sniffed at either.
Another tip is when I go for a repeat ship pack of anything I'm not bothered about cards for, there are some ebay sellers that split the cards away from the ship (the dials and stuff you need are kept with the ship though check first!), it might save you some cash. I'm lucky enough to have a great gaming venue in Sanctuary Games that keeps a good stock in so I prefer to pay a little more and pay where I play.
Most of all have fun, there are plenty of free list builders and sound panels that I sometimes use in games (depending on how serious it is) just to keep up the tension at key moments.

I just sent you a PM about possible games in the future.
I'd be more than willing to either teach you to play or lend you ships to try them out.
Also, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the X-wing community here in the OKC metro area. Everyone seems to be really relaxed about the game and almost everyone will help you understand the nuances of the game. It's also gaining a lot of ground in all of the gaming stores in the metro area.
