Anyone know much about them, tabled them? I tried lookin' up on the lexicanum, but wasn't very informative.
Pref. Enemy?
Chapter Tactics?
What Codex would you use with them?
Etc.
Would they actually be a CSM army? I know they've been cast from the imperium, but despised chaos, so TEA-EFF is the deal with them?
Loyal to the Emperor, but believe that the imperium is corrupt. Yet still fight the enemies of man.
What are your thoughts?
What army list would suit them? (I know, they're all dead)

IIRC they were primarily the assault marines of the Imperial Fists.
They'd be a Space Marine codex army for sure (probably using Imperial Fist chapter tactics). Regardless of the fact that they never knowingly worshipped Chaos, they've only ever employed normal Space Marine units and vehicles. They've never used raptors, never used obliterators, never used Soul Grinders, never wore spikey armour, never used noise marines/beserkers/plague marines, etc etc. They just had a few mutated members in the upper brass, not really mutated by their own choice.
This is assuming you're playing them during the events of the novels. Before everything went to hell, they were a normal codex compliant Imperial Fist successor (or... thought they were an Imperial Fist successor, at least).
Post-novel series, there's like... 3 of them (at most) so I doubt you can field an army with that.

Okay, I was somewhat confused when reading about the arachnid like mutations of the chapter master and so on. Never have read the Omnibus or other novels on them, I might just stick with building on a fluffy Imperial Fists, but they're seeming to be pretty common next to BA and BT.
And the yellow looks like it's going to be a "fun" color choice in attempting at making it just dirty enough to not be an eye-sore.
Although I remember reading about Dorn's armour being pretty flashy in the Horus Heresy series.
Just trying to get ideas for something different, but I think perhaps I should stick to something common starting out, Seems I would be able to get a lot more help with the Imperial Fists than any second founding/successor chapters.

Renegade Inquisitor de Marche
|
They are a kind of renegade chapter that believes the Imperium no longer serves the people of the Imperium. It's a belief that isn't uncommon within SM chapters but they happened to bump into an Inquisitor who escalated the situation pretty swiftly. There were also one or two other circumstances surrounding their fall from grace.
They have since tried to help the people of the Imperium rather than the Imperium itself while also on the run.
I'd say the books are worth a read if you're gonna do an SD army but there are people who say they aren't that great.
They focused largely on boarding actions and close quarters combat for the most part but like any IF successor they were reasonably adept at siege warfare and like any SM they were able to adapt to many different things.
Like Tiamat said there aren't many of them. During the series they had severe supply limitations so you'd be forced into mostly mounted infantry or drop pods if you went fluffy (Few terminators and heavy vehicles.). I'm reasonably sure their mutations were not confined to the upper hierarchy however. You could probably use the SM codex with one or two counts as (Sarpedon would be an interesting one for example). If your regular opponents are really nice they may even allow you to alter a few things to closer match the fluff when you play them.
There are a few people who have done similar projects on this forum and on others so it's worth a look to see what they did.
Good luck!

The Soul Drinker's "special thing" is being the marines who ride into battle on the short yellow schoolbus. "Not great" doesn't begin to describe the incompetency and idiocy of the Soul Drinkers.

I may just have to read the novels first, get a better understanding for them, and then try it as a later project. I'm a strong believer in following the fluff lol. I did like what I was reading on them before. Might have to set down the Heresy and pick up the Omnibus for the soul drinkers if I can find it. Or would there be a better novel to begin with? Automatically Appended Next Post: Lol Wyzilla, I remember reading some of your replies about the Lamenters, made me laugh.
So you're saying their tactics are pretty much on spur of the moment and not so much thought out? (Going off of the short bus crack.)

If you do go for them be sure to check out the new Blood Angel miniatures, there are quite a few bits with chalice iconography that just beg to be used for Soul Drinkers.

Eh, that's not a bad idea, I forgot they actually made BA marines with their own armour traits now. IIRC they also have the droplets too, I think I may just try when I have more experience with it all. Now I just have to find a good forum with a non video, step-by-step, tutorial of how to paint imperial fist and what paints to use. I just can't wait to have an army I can table. Just hope I can paint as well as most others and not make em look like juhnk. Thanks all!
Just purchased the SD omnibus on Ebay though >.>

They believed that having their Chapter Master grow eight legs was a gift from the God Emperor.
Mind you the Imperial Creed is quite clear about Xenos, Mutants, and Heretics in the "suffer not" clause. At least they're extinct and never going to return in force, ever. The Omnibus doesn't include all of the Soul Drinkers novels. It's incomplete and made several years before the series ended.

There are actually a surprising number of bits with a chalice and no blood. Both the Death Company and Sanguinary Guard boxes include a shoulderpad with a chalice and a strangely halo'd pad trim which would fit a Soul Drinker much better than a Blood Angel. The new Blood Angel Tactical and Terminator boxes both have torsos with winged chalices - again without blood - like those shown on most of the Soul Drinker book cover art, whilst the former also has two different Mk7 helmets with chalices on. Not really enough to justify buying the boxes but there's always bitz sellers and swaps with BA players.
Addendum: Personally I'm not a fan of the books - there does tend to be a hell of a lot of stupid in them - but I am a fan of the basic concept of the chapter, I've been tempted for a while to do a force and say that In My 40k universe Sarpedon was tragically killed in battle before the events of the books.

@Gashrog
I never really paid much attention to it, as I just moved to a new town and haven't found an internet provider in this rustic hell pit that will offer any high-speed internet, all they can offer is a basic dial up connection (no joke) So I'm running off of a 3g tether. (very impatient) But I can picture what you're explaining, and sounds very tempting.
And I found the omnibus for 3$ haha. Sold
@ Wyzilla
Ah, see I was under the impression that the mutations were due from lack of a chaplain or apothecary, I can't exactly remember how it read.
I still don't understand how their not apart of the Chaos renegade list, IIRC didn't do some dirty work for a chaos daemon?
And part of their force went renegade under Khornes influence? Again, I'm probably wrong, but theinquisition usually fries all for one, don't they?
Maybe would be a more interesting idea to later begin a CSM force as soul drinkers, as from what I've read, about 4 are lost in the warp.
Could be interesting, eh? or not. Idk.

Don't forget the confusion around whether they're the same Soul Drinkers who served alongside the Templars, Fists and Fire Hawks during the Second Siege of Terra a couple of hundred years after the novels...

Er, the novels were set modern day, Crimson Tears makes numerous references to the Crimson Fists's disaster at Rynn's World and both Lysander and Pugh (current Imperial Fist First Captain and Chapter Master) are in Phalanx.

Meh, If I did go that route, it wouldn't be fluffed. Just a for fun project really, Just because so much happened with them, their run ins with Khorne and Tzneetch etc. But of course I would need to do my pre-heresy emperors children first... This hobby is going to keep me busy until my death-bed I'm sure.
And I'm not sure, but didn't the SD and Crimson Fists duke it out after hunting down some SD traitors while the IG were at front with the Dark Eldar?
I've been bored today...a lot of skimming has been done, and a lot of information jumbled and not settled yet.

They did. That's where the references were, ie: the Crimson Fists Captain wore armour "forged by the finest artificers to have survived the Rynn's World disaster" and the Soul Drinker Chaplain recognises a particular Crimson Fist that he had met "when the Chaplains of the Imperial Fists' successor Chapters had gathered at Rynn's World. That had been before the Crimson Fists' fortress-monastery was destroyed"

Well...I've decided, on the Soul Drinker route. IF I think would be way more than I can handle as a rookie. Won't be a fluff army, anything I share would be a spoiler to the novels...won't...do...it...must...FIGHT IT! >.0
Good book though.
