Hey all

With the bit of Christmas money I have been given I'm thinking of picking up some weathering powders, I've heard great things about Secret Weapon Minature pigments but unfortunately the shipping makes them a no go. So what am I looking for? Some experiences from you guys that have used other weathering pigment makes and that I can get in the UK easily.

Cheers

This uk store has MiG, Vallejo and AK interactive pigments on offer. Been meaning to try them myself so couldnt say which is best for what situations.

Vallejo, Mig and AK interactive make some of the better wreathing pigments on the market.

You can also pick up artists pastels and make your own powders. Just just a sharp knife or a file against the pastel stick and you'll be good to go.

Don't forget that you can use pigments for a variety of things outside of weathering. They are an extremely versatile medium.

Secret Weapon Miniature and MiG are pretty good.

I would advise against using artist pastels and such because you are not only dealing with pigments. You are introducing wax and chalk into your mix.

Better to go with pure stuff.

The binder in the pastel has no appreciable effect on the application of the ground up pastel. High quality soft pastels (which has more pigment and less binder) are better than cheap and/or hard pastels, but both are perfectly usable, it just takes more layers to build up a color with the latter. The best kind to use are pan pastels, which have almost no binder and pressed into small pans, similar to make up. The best part is that they are readily available, relatively cheap, and the variety of colors is far better than you can find with Vallejo (mainly earthy tones and rust) and MiG/AK (also a lot of earthy tones but a better selection than Vallejo). Secret Weapon Miniatures has a pretty good selection of great colors, but you can get even more from pastels.
