So like many other people I came into some money for the holidays, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to go with it.
My Marines are Salamanders (pretty much since 3rd with a side-step for a while in 4th). I've resigned myself to the idea that my Salamanders would be best served by retooling them to be a drop pod list.
I would like to run Centurion Devastators though, and I feel like running a Censtar (not a full one definitely, but at least a CM and an Inquisitor or allied Librarian) and a Salamanders DP list would be mutually exclusive. Am I far off in my assumption or have people gotten this sort of mash-up to work?

Salamanders can only get dedicated transport drop pods. You will need to ally with a 7th ed codex that can take drop pods as a fast attack choice to allow Centurions inside. Centurions take up 3 spaces on drop pods so you could only attach a single character without terminator armor.
You could join up the other characters once everyone is on the battlefield, or you could just use a single divination inquisitor. I have used 3 in a pod + Coteaz and it worked great.

Oh, just to clarify, the Centstar is likely not getting dropped itself.
But now that you mentioned that I had forgotten that there were armies that allowed you to take Drop Pods as non-dedicated transports...

You could easily ally in Blood Angels for a Pod, and then attach a Librarian. If you're taking Salamanders then there is no Tigurius, so I'd take a BA librarian for divination. If you do Drop Pod them in, they will be a high priority threat... It isn't a bad idea to run a bike squad up the board and jump a Chapter Master off the bikes and into the centurions for protection. I am assuming they are taking Grav of course?

I'm working on a White Scar group entirely to field a bike lord, 2 units of biker troops with grav guns, and 9 Grav Centurions, who will be deployed via Drop Pods from my main Blood Angels Detachment
