Hey guys,
I have been given the new deathstorm box as an awesome Christmas present and cannot wait to get my teeth in to painting them all up
My biggest question is about the paints to use, I currently have the army painter mega set http://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-hobby-and-scenery-by-manufacturer/the-army-painter/army-painter-warpaints/mega-paint-set?d=22&gclid=CKWqrtD55cICFYcSwwodwHsADw and was wondering what extra bits people would recommend picking up.
If you could recommend GW citadel paints that would be great as I am working today (boooooo) but have a GW a few hundred yards from the office so will pick some up on my lunch break (yay)
So far I am thinking a tin of chaos black base, some meph red, agrax earthshade and nuln oil. is there any other essentials?
Thanks in advance for all the help, you guys are awesome

Gamesworkshops own youtube painting tutorial for Blood Angels.
Theres 2 methods he tries out too. Not a bad vid, nothing too complicated painting ability wise.
There doin Mephistion Red basecoat, followed by an agrax earthshade wash, and a clean up with meph red. With a edge highlight of evil suns scarlet. Yout could go into oranges or brighter reds for highlighting too.
The other was, Mephistion red base, drybrush kindleflame, Wash Carroburg Crimson. Quick and dirty effect.

The drybrushing one, I think could be taken another step, with another lighter drybrushing of the kindleflame (or a controled edge highlight of luganath orange - the same colour in layer style)
And then glazing in bloodletter red glaze to bring the red values back up.

So I'm kind of disappointed in the reds in this new line of paints. I've been using the older reds, Scab Red over the black base or primer, and then build up the layers using 4 lighter reds. Good luck with this new paint set I'm sure it will be fine.

If your keen on the older colours ; scab red through to blood red, I hear vallejo game colour do a pretty much the same trio of reds, and Coat d'arms do the original ones still.

As someone who uses Scab Red a lot (and has several pots in reserve) NOTHING from Army Painted, P3, Vallejo, Coat D'arms or Reaper comes close.
The nearest equivalents are P3 Sanguine base (much darker) and Scale 75 Deep Red (doesn't have the slightly magenta-ish tinge)
Regarding the Blood Angels scheme in general, it really depends on what look you want. Have you seen any photos you could share with us that show how you'd like them to look?

Thanks for all the tips guys.
I think I will pick up the stuff for the drybrush technique for the power armour and a few of the metallics, everything else I think I have the paints for in my set already.
If they do not turn out a horror mess I will post up some progress pics Automatically Appended Next Post: well a quick lunch trip and 40 odd quid later I now have pretty much everything from that video, minus the bits for the scrolls as I am quite happy with the effect I can get from those using an army painter necrotic flesh/skeleton bone combo.
I will let you all know how I get on

I airbrush my models when basecoating. What I do is I prime it black, then spray a Mephiston Red lightly as a basecoat to get a dark red then over spray at a 45 degree angle to brighten the mephiston red up to leave the shadows underneath. Then I do a spot highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet. That is how I basecoat my models.
Now If you don't have a airbrush I would also suggest using mephiston red for base then do a top highlight with a thinned evil sunz scarlet. I would also suggest wildrider red for the edge highlight. For shading I use the technique in the GW vids using Agrax Earthshade with a fine detail brush. I hope this helps.

Thanks for that.
I have ordered an airbrush, but it hasn't arrived yet... more new toys to play with soon. Was thinking of using Vallejo model air through it though as the dropper bottles look easier to mix your paint with medium from. Is there an easy way to use GW paints through an airbrush?

I moved all my citadels to droppers... theres that way.
Before that I used to put some medium in the airbrush, and then add paint a bit a time with a paint brush, mixing it in as I went. Worked alright.

Maybe a complete rookie question..... I brought the dry paint mentioned in the blood angels tutorial and it seems like a solid gloopy lump in the pot rather than a paint. Is this normal, or have I been given a dried up pot? It did seem to go on to the model ok for dry brushing but did clog up the brush some.

Here you go, Wargemes Foundry paint sets, ready to go in the layering, I learned of the style of the Three Up paint scheme from a GW manager I know. Here is an easy way to get the right colors in one go. He told me 3 colors ie red, and you've got a quality mini, you move on to layering with 4-5 or more then you're really getting into a higher class of painting. I can only manage four with a highlight on the edges which I don't count as the 5th.
Anyway I'll carry on for days trying to explain this... Here's the link.

By the way, everyone here has great ideas, schemes etc. We have some seriously talented hobbyists on Dakka!
Here's a book I'd like to look over.
KEVIN DALLIMORE AND THE FOUNDRY PAINT SYSTEM
Foundry’s acrylic paints have been specially designed to suit my painting style. Each main colour is teamed up with a ready mixed highlight and shading tone, which means you won’t have to spend lots of time mixing paints, you won’t be wasting any paint, and you can be sure the colours will be consistent. There’s a huge range of colours in big 20ml pots, which are quick drying and intermixable with other manufacturers’ acrylic paint.
I use them all the time and can’t recommend them enough.

Yeah there does seem to be some awesomely talented people on here, one of the main reasons I came here for advice
I dont think that my stuff will be anywhere near as cool as what I see on here, but everyone has to start somewhere. So far I have Karleen half built and the power armour based in meph red, drybrushed and then washed in crimson. I think I may do another detail shade with agrax and then highlight with a 50/50 meph red and yellow(cant remember the name I think its demonic yellow) for edge highlight.
