Thunderhawk Pilot Dropping From Orbit

AZ

Can you drop let's say a Devilfish or a Hammerhead from the air and have it safely float to the ground?

Let's say I drop this thing a mile up in the air, will it survive? Or what if I'm in space and I fly one from a docking bay from a spaceship... Will it float to the planet and hit the ground safely?

Dropping a 10 ton metalic/wraithbone construct from orbit? Sounds like some cool stuff -- it will be adopted by 40K sooner or later, if it hasn't been already.

I'd not do it on tabletop, however. Phisiscally.

I don't think it would survive. If I recall correctly, the tau vehicles make an anti-gravity cushion that keeps them aloft, sort of like an air cushion hover craft but without the skirt. So they would only start slowing down at a couple feet off the ground. And as far as I know they can't actually fly. But they can aim their engines at the ground to float a little higher than normal.

... Hammerheads and Devilfish are capable of deploying directly from a Manta in low orbit, explicitly so.

Yep, like leman russ. STEEEL RAEEEHN!

On the sidenote, aren't landspeeders capable of doing something like this too? From the art on them in the old books i've seen them flying pretty high.

Anywayz, even if you're not sure the tank can get dropped via an anti-gravity tech, it can still get dropped via an old good parachute. This para-drop is in use for light tanks and infantry transports irl. And for quite some time the infantry-men had not been issued separate parachutes. So, the vehicle was dropped with soldiers INSIDE of it. And they can't know where they're gona land cause all the hatches got to be closed. I actually know a guy who claims he has been dropped like this and it's like:
"Ohhhhh shiii- Open, damn it...Fuuuuu- Open, damn it..." *PSHHHHHHT KRRRRRRR - the parachute opens* "Ohhhhh shiii- Not in the lake...Fuuuu- not in the lake...".

There's a picture in the current Tau 'dex of Storm Talons and Land Speeders in a dogfight with Piranhas and Hammerheads.

In Engine of Mork it mentions a Hammerhead aloft in the air before a Lilfta-Droppa reverses its gravity field and sends it plowing into the ground.

Also it appears they do fly in the comic Fire and Honour, or atleast can be very high off the ground while in transit.

This move was a tank formation in one of the books(or web pdfs) Tau (or any skimmer) could basically bounce supper high and then land in the middle of a battle.

Theirs images in certain codex's (can't remember if it's Tau or Space marines) where you see crisis suits, devilfish and hammerheads all cruising towards some space marine flyers, the angle of the pic might just hide how high they are but a few look like they're quite high. I assume that atleast the Tau skimmers have some sort of ability to "fly" around.

Found these from the Fire and Honour comics.
