After picking up Army Builder I noticed that there was no option to add an Auspex to any of my Tactical Unit models. When I built my first Tactical squad, I equipped an Auspex on one of the models...I liked the way it looked and what it did. I saw a few models in the Space Marine Codex that had them equipped as well, so I went with one.

Now after reading the Codex again more closely, I guess it's not allowed? I don't see "Special Issue Wargear" under the options for equipping Tactical Squad members, and of course the Auspex is "Special Issue Wargear". Although under the Auspex entry it states "a model may equip an Auspex" and doesn't specify any specific units or models.

So the short of it is.....can a Tactical Squad member equip and use an Auspex? Not looking to discuss or debate the usefulness of an Auspex, only whether it is "legal" or not?

Thanks!

No, they can't. However, there's nothing to stop you modelling one, it clearly can't do anything but will look cool.

If it's not listed as an option, then it's not an option. So no, it's not legal.

An Auspex is special issue wargear available for the Captain, Chapter Master, MoTF, Chaplain and Librarian. Probably some others as well. They can use it in place of shooting and target a unit, reducing their cover save by 1 until the end of the phase.

So, unfortunately Tactical Squads can't take them, but it is a functioning piece of wargear for some people.

Well the responses were about what I thought, bums me out that I didn't notice it when I built my first squad. Still looks great and I would guess in the fluff a Tactical marine would have access to am Auspex. As always thanks for the responses and verification.

My bad, didn't really see that you already knew what it did ( but hopefully somebody else can learn anyway. )

To answer your question specifically, you just have to find who all can take it in the army list entries by reading their available options. I probably missed at least one guy who can, but those were the few that I saw when I flipped through the HQ section.

Yeah, you should totally model them on anyway, they're a neat piece of equipment and add to the models character. Don't worry whether or not they actually get to use it, as most people probably wont mind or tbh even realize that it's a functioning piece of wargear. I don't ever really see people run them in their army lists.

I wonder why they included the bit in the Tactical box? I guess just for fun rather than to be used in games.

Sound advice, and a good point.

The tactical kit is shared with the Devastator kit right? The srgt. Of the Devs come with a auspex iirc.

So just a case of sharing the molds.

The box came before the item actually having rules.
Used to be purely decorative.

The dev squad doesn’t share any parts with the tac squad these days. And the dev sarge comes with a signum, which is a different piece of wargear.

Back in previous editions it had a use. Pretty sure 3rd, not sure if it made it to 4th. They let you shoot at people who tried to infiltrate close to you, and interacted with some hidden unit rules.

Ah, ok that makes sense. I shall keep it, and just not use it.

no op you cant, the fact that tacticals come with an auspex (and other marine units); is because its a relic of days gone by. there was a day a time a place where tacticals and so many other units could take a variety of weapons and wargear options on sergeants or characters in squads such as the auspex (and some others).

in the current codex edition they took out a lot of stuff and they did so again in the 5th edition codex.

admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts

The Auspex is the little handheld thing that looks kind of like a Dragonball radar but with some spikes on the top of it.

The Signum is the backpack addition that has a couple little lights and wires sticking up.

I use the Auspex quite a bit actually. I get a barebones chaplain and put him in a drop pod with a full tac squad. They drop down, he lights up the target in cover and they go to town on it.
