I just started learning 40k. I got the Dark Vengeance Box set for me and my son.
OK it comes with 3 Bikers, a Sargent with chain sword & bolter, Troopers with Bolter and plasmas gun. All the bikes have twin linked bolter guns.
Here is my questions,

1. They all have 1 Attack do I get to pick which gun they attack with? Mounted twin bolter or carried weapon? If so shouldn’t I always pick the twin bolter over the carried one for the re-rolls (know the plasma is a different case)

2. Do you pretty much treat bilkers as standard infantry for purposes of Shooting, Assault and Morale? I know that movement and special rules are different. Like in assault they charge and fight with their WS like infantry? Roll wounds against their toughness and Saves like infantry?

Sorry if all of my questions are basic, but I am just getting started and I have no local players.
thanks

The number of attacks on your profile has nothing to do with shooting.

The Attack stat is only used for close combat (melee), when shooting, you use the profile of the gun (and the model's Ballistic Skill) - in this case, Rapid Fire means a number of shots depending on how far away the enemy is. The Bolt Pistol (the bikers don't have a standard Boltgun) is mostly useless on a bike, but there are some fringe uses for it.

Yes. All non-vehicle units use the same basic Infantry rules (just modified a bit dependent on the type).

Welcome to the hobby. You are now doomed.

1.
When shooting you pick a weapon to shoot with. Your attack characteristic only matters in close combat (i.e. you get that many dice to roll in close combat + modifiers). So a bolter would get 1, or if rapid firing 2, when shooting. And yes, you should always pick the twin-linked bolter over a normal bolter.

2.
Bikers works a lot like infantry, yes. It's mostly the movement that differs. Allocating wounds and fighting in close combat is exactly the same. They do get the Relentless special rule, which can matter when shooting (with DA's very OP Banner of Devastation for example). Movement range is different (as you have noticed) and difficult terrain is treated as dangerous terrain. Oh and when assaulting the get Hammer of Wrath attacks.

Thanks for the answers, they help a lot.

For some reason I keep mixing Attacks with shooting. I will just have to remember A for Assault and that should help.

I have seen the Hammer of Wrath rule does that apply to all vehicles?

Most Vehicles do not have Hammer of Wrath, because most Vehicles cannot charge - remember that Bikes are not "Vehicles" even though it seems un-intuitive.

Bikes (and Jetbikes) have it because it is listed on page 63 of the Rulebook as Special Rules that all units with the Bike / Jetbikes unit-type have.

So, Bikes have a lot of bang. I've never used them, but have been charged frequently, they go something like this:

1. They move.
2. They shoot (with their twin linked bolters, usually rapid fire as the bikes are relentless)
3. The ones having special weapons like plasma guns usually fire these instead of the bolters.
4. They charge.
5. Enemy overwatches.
6. Your bikers jinks. Giving them 4+ jink save.
7. Hammer of wrath at initiative 10 is resolved.
8. You attack with your 1 attack, plus 1 for charging at normal Initiative.

Add to it that you may choose to use krak or frag grenades, or enemy can use grenades, as well as challenges, and you will see that bike phases can be confusing to even experienced players

Yeah, bikes essentially have three attacks on the charge if they make it to base contact.

Personally I wouldn't explain it like that as he/she might start roiling 3 dice in CC, instead of 1 for HoW and 2 for CC
