Over the past 3-4 years I have played WHF on and off. As of now I am in no way competitive and haven't really pushed for it. The problem I have/will run into is this, I enjoy WE, Dwarves, and to some degree Lizardmen. I love WE for the speed of the army but you have a lot of shooty elements which people dislike playing against (I sold them), the same goes for dwarves which I had sold for my WE. However, the new models really have me wanting my first faction back. The big problem I have is we do not have very many WHF players around much less die hard competitive people and I do not want to push people away. So I am debating a couple of options and asking for advice.

First, I have about 1000 pts of lizardmen still with the old book but am unsure about using those. I love the triceratops model and dinosaurs in general so I picked them up a long time ago and could easily start here. They would be a more balanced and probably play okay but I do prefer the dwarf longbeard models they just look great.

Second, I can re-start my dwarves and take the chance that people might not like to play against me very much. Friendly games I could drop a couple cannons?

I am just not sure on how I feel about changing armies based on people anymore. I mean I don't get mad if people purple sun me all day because that's one of their armies pros, same goes for hydras etc... I guess I would like to know how balanced Lizardmen are at the moment and do they do anything that largely pisses people off? Second are they fun, Dwarves are fun but can be repetitious due to cannons grinding it out then troops moving in, but I like the fluff so it keeps me interested. How do you guys balance what you play? I don't get to spend hours at the shop so I want to practice with an army I would use in tournaments not just a theme list for most games.

WE aren't really hated. Dwarfs are.

WE have two builds that do well at a competitive level and people get butthurt about them because they're very good at what they do. The rest of the book is absolute rubbish for that.(Tree spirits, and combat infantry.)

Depends what sort of list you run.

Skink swarms are almost as unpleasant to play as avoidance WE lists, save that you catch skinks every now and then so actually get to roll some dice. Party Slanns are also obnoxiously powerful.

Playing dwarfs is a matter of pushing your units across the table and removing models along the way. Hit their lines with enough guys and you win. Don't and you lose. ....yaaaay?

Wood Elves, again, depend on the list. The problem with them is that they can build a list that literally will never see combat unless the WE player seriously feths up, and most people playing those sorts of lists are good enough to...not. There are few less pleasant ways to play warhammer than against an army that just shoots at you while never giving you a chance to get into combat or, in fact, do much of ANYthing remotely useful. The WE players in our local meta had to start adding combat troops simply for the sake of their sportsmanship scores.

The difference, though, is that lizardmen and wood elves are both at least fun to play WITH. Unless you really like rolling the same two dice over and over again all day dwarfs are pretty boring regardless of which side of the table you're on.

Thanks for the info so far guys! I love dwarf fluff and the new models which is why it's fun for me, it's not fun for other people but it is fun shooting cannons and getting those big rolls.

I always played with a triceratops, lol for the life of me cannot think of what they are called in the book. I will run at least one and do like combat troops (also love WoC there are just too many people that play them) so will run those as well, no skink swarm for me.

If I run lizards I will run with a balanced list probably lore of life slann, couple triceratops, TG unit, and rockdropping birds, and fill the rest to flavor. The big pro for lizards for me is I feel like it will feel more balanced for my opponent. Are there multiple good builds with them that are balanced or is it rather one sided like dwarves and WE?

A Party Slaan was the most broken build in the old book.

It was a Slaan with all the disciplines, a BSB, Death loremastery(One of the disciplines), Bane Head, and a Feedback scroll.

He picks a character, deathsnipes it, and does double wounds.

If you have a vampire lord casting, he bane heads and feedback scrolls for double wounds on that too.

Sorry can't disclose.....infiltrating

Well dwarfs can certainly throw more than just gun line builds out, so I feel some of these answers are just narrow minded.

Dwarves posses some of the best infantry in the game minus the movement aspects, a general willing to learn the nuances of working around that amd making good use of gyros can certainly get mileage out of combat oriented dwarf list

Not as easy or cut and dry as castle'in up, but can still be quite enjoyable if that's your thing, though no matter your choice you probably want to drop 2 cannons to help with large beast/ warmachines you can't afford to leave around for too long

BSB with banner of discipline for LD 10.
You channel with 3d6 on 5s
Loremaster high / all SIG's
Rerolls failed dispel attempt or store a dispel die
4++ with MR (2)

Dishes out spells like nobody's business. Very flexible. Huge force multiplier. Nearly impossible to kill when in a skink cloud.
