Hey guys,
Presently I am in college and have no interest in continuing warhammer 40k. In your experience, where is the best place to sell your miniatures? Dakka swap shop, ebay, etc.?
Cheers

I would use the Dakka Swap Shop or Bartertown myself.. Ebay is a crapshoot for sure..
alternately, if you have a local Craigslist, you might have a good chance to offload without needing to ship.
Do you have a FLGS? Maybe put up a flyer if the owner ok's it?

It depends how much effort you want to put into it
Minimum effort is see if your local store will buy but you'll get very little even if they will
you'll get slightly more from sticking a note (or just tellin people) in your local gamestore/club that you've got stuff to sell but again unless you get lucky folk will be after bargain prices
craigslist is a bit more hassle, but again avoids shipping and may attract the occasional buyer who will pay more amongst the resellers who will want stuff dirt cheap
then moving up you've got all the options that require you to ship stuff,
the more your willing to break you stuff up into small units the more cash you'll get, but the more effort it will be
bartertown/dakka swapshop etc are worth a go, as is ebay,
if you've got an existing presence on one of them that's your best bet (eg I've got decent ebay feedback from buying and selling so I'd go there)
ebay will take their cut from your sales (and listings if you go over the current 20 free listings a month for private sellers), but does offer some protection against scammers if you send stuff tracked

Recognize that with used minis, you're probably going to get 50% MSRP.
That said, i would personally recommend bartertown. It has a very, very large 40k community, and is a site dedicated to trading, buying, and selling gaming paraphernalia.
www.bartertown.com.
However, here's my suggestion. I am 35. I went to college once too, and offloaded ALL my gaming stuff after my first semester as i started working in nightclubs and then later transferred to another school that i lived on and off campus. If you'd asked me at that time if i thought i'd be gaming again, i would have told you that you were crazy, that i didn't have time or patience for gaming anymore, didn't like the scene, wasn't rewarding, at turns needed to focus on my studies / was having more fun in the nightlife scenes i was deep into in a couple major cities in the northeast.
Fast forward to three years post college. I picked up a little game called Warmachine for fun with some friends. A year past that ? I was playing on the nationally competitive tournament scene. Shortly thereafter ? I was an Infernal for Privateer for the next 3-4 years. I was also playing malifaux, infinity, 40k again, and just dipping my toe into WHFB.
The point is... what you're sure on right now, you might change your mind on in the future.
Ask your parents or guardian or other family member if you can put a tote in a closet labeled "Under No Circumstances throw away without (your name)'s permission". THis tote contains all your minis, rule books, dice, and other gaming stuff you were thinking of selling.
The number of people that have gone to college / grad school / job abroad / deployment / etc and come back to gaming after several years is astounding. If you ever liked it, you will like it again later in life, particularly when studying, partying, and tail chasing (depending on what school you go to, not necessarily in that order!) are not nearly as time consuming or important as they once were.
I really, really hope you take my advice. I know you probably won't, as most late teen, early twenty somethings suffer from the same sense of infallibility mixed with invincibility i, and every other late teen and early twenty something, did when i was that age. Trust me. In 5-8 years you may come to thank me, as what you have in your dust-rimmed tote is now 1) very hard to find and potentially valuable, and 2) is that many models you don't have to re-invest in.
Same advice to anyone thinking of leaving a game for any reason. Don't. Put the minis in a closet. If you are in college, wait 5-6 years before throwing them out (and i am a minimalist neat freak saying that when it comes to my house!), if you are post college, wait two years before throwing / selling etc.
Anywho, good luck with college. It's often the single coolest time in a person's life, where you figure out who your idealized self is, and before the crushing weight of years and cynicism grind that out of you.

To me, lol.
I think it varies, but I've had good experience with Dakka and Bartertown. Also, army specialty sites like The Dark City or Bolter and Chainsword. If you are interested in trading for another game or army, you'll get much better value for your money.
(Seriously though...if you have Eldar or Dark Eldar, shoot me a PM!)

I agree with Haight too. I took a break for nearly 8 years and then rediscovered the hobby when my sons pulled out my miniatures and started setting up battle scenes like they were toy soldiers. Now, both play multiple systems and one has turned into quite an accomplished young painter.

I am very glad that Younger-Me decided to box up all my miniature-junk so that Now-Me could open it up and muck around with ancient Space Crusade/Hero Quest/Necromunda/early 40k miniatures.
If you can box it, do it.

Agree with the above, a lot of people I know have gone back to it after 10-15 years of playing different games....
Have a good one at college, but keep the minis boxed if you can, you may well appreciate it, and if not then you can sell 'vintage' miniatures in 20 years time!

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate your advice.
Really, it wasn't just college that killed it for me. I hadn't played any games or even looked at my miniatures for a year preceding college. The price hikes and transition to 6th-ed just killed the game in my mind. Even at college, a few guys in my fraternity play 40k and I still had no interest in continuing.
Even if I do end up getting back into the hobby, the money I put into my loans now will more than pay for getting them back in the long run... probably. Besides, now you guys get to have miniatures at [more] affordable prices!
I guess I'll go with the swapshop.

You'll need to build up some reputation first if you go the Bartertown route. People will be leery to buy/ trade for large amounts with a zero-rep trader, so be prepared to start small. Also be prepared to ship first.
I've had good luck with EBay, you can control the terms more and there's less risk if you go through Paypal. You have to pay fees though
