So quit at launchish of 6th edition. Have the dark vengeance starter set and chaos space marines codex. Switching jobs and want to keep in touch with some friends; so want to introduce 2 of them to 40k while getting back into it myself. Have lots of space marine models/dark eldar and some chaos space marines. Trying to think of best way/cheap to get everyones feet wet. Should i start them off reading old codex or rule books? Or buy new since everything changed so fast?

Buy new, many things changed. Start with small 500 points games

Awesome thanks, wasn't for sure if new was the way but was leaning that way. Wasnt sure if should start in 6th b4 transition. Kinda want to let them borrow everything so they dont get sticker shock. Ill probably pick up a couple of the small rule books and dark eldar/ space marine codex.

Do yourself a favour and don't bother. Grab yourself a Dropzone Commander or Infinity starter set for less than £60, save youself some money, get a decent ruleset that won't boggle and confuse the pish out of new players and is nothing like as eye wateringly painful on the wallet.

Seriously, do some research, watch some youtube vids etc and thank me later.

Ya i have alot of models for space marines/dark eldar prolly 2500pts each with multiple ways to get there with marines. Only 2 halfs of dark vengeance for chaos. Not really looking at other games just needed to know if having them read/play 6th edition rules b4 we bought 7th was a bad idea.

If you intend to play 7th and are teaching them for the first time I wouldn't bother getting them to read 6th, it'll just get confusing. The rules didn't change much, but it'll just make it more complicated for a new player to learn one rule set and then have to learn all the little modifications and such.

Pick a better game. Infinity, batman, bolt action, malifaux... cheaper and 9/10 better rules

I would advise showing your friends some models in whatever literature you got read some background fluff and ask which ones hey think are most bad ass. I think rules come second.

If I was given some Sm or DA to play with it would put me off coz I dont like the models. But I guess everyone is different.

Pick a new game. 40k is so bad, and GW literally stole my wallet and punched me in the face.

/sarcasm

I'd say see if people want to go in with you on the Deathstorm or one of the DV sets. Other than that, pick up a new rulebook on eBay for cheap, use the models you have and the codices or buy one if you need to, and play small 250-500 point games to get everyone accustomed.

New starter sets have been pretty good deals like the BA vs Tyranid box set. Also because of those check e-bay there should be a lot of fairly cheap 7th edition rule books on there and things like cheap Terminators.

also for just general army building GW has put out box sets (replaced the old battle boxes) for armies that often have at least a decent savings on their own and even better if you get a discount from either online or your FLGS.

Also if they're into Sci-fi kind of stuff already , then I second having them read any lore you have and pulling up the online lore, obviously If someone feels any kind of passion for the army they play then they are far more likely to keep going.

also welcome back to WH40k , as you can see the Jilted ex-gfs are still lurking about on 40k parts of forums eager to bust out the bash hammer any time they can.

Well, I'd first take a look into WMH.
This game is more affordable and more balanced.
PP is more predictable than GW and GW could be a sinking ship.

The easiest way is to get one of the 7th-ed starter sets that come with the rulebook.
If you have Apple devices, the ibooks versions of the codexes and rulebooks are good, I hear. Get the Apple store vouchers when they're on offer, and load up.

Old models are still very valid, but some units are less-used these days, what with assault getting shafted quote badly in 6th and 7th.
