I played Warhammer 40k with a friend a while ago, although I wasn't at all invested in the game. I decided that when I finally got into the game, I would play Tyranids. Just the other day I got my Tyranid swarm in the mail and I started to put it together (40x termagants and hormagunts, 10x gargoyles, 1x carnifex). My question is, what is the best way to start with Tyranids? I already put together about 24 termagants with fleshborers and I made my carnifex as a Dakkafex (Which I was told was was 4 devourers). I want to get some opinions before I finish my termagants.

One thing you will need to get is some synapse creatures, they will really help. May also want to look into a hive tyrant with wings and 2x twin linked devorers, tried one in my first tyranid game and he did amazingly well.

As for the termagants the weapon option really is up to what you want them to do, if you just want them as cannon fodder keep them cheap, if you want them to put out some real hurt give them devourers, the devourer gaunts are twice as expensive in game but 3x the number of shots.

So, I'm going to make 2 squads of termagants with devourers and I'll be ordering the Wrath of the Hive kit. It has some synapse creatures in it and I can use the tervigon in my termagant squad.

That will give you a nice base for synapse as 3 units in there provide it. The devourers are nice, one thing you can do to help avoid wasting points is run a unit mixed, some with flesh borers out front to die from whatever shooting comes at the squad and upgraded ones behind them.

This is great, thanks for this! Any other tips I should keep in mind?

Try to proxy a unit before buying/building a unit to make sure they play the way you think they will, it can end up saving you a lot of money.

Remember it is your army and list, make the army the way you want and have fun after all it is just a game.
