Hey guys i have a Newbie question for you. I play CSM if i am wanting to use the rules from the Black Legion or the Crimson Slaughter codex do I have to take them as an attachment? If so are they just an allied (1 HQ 1 Troop)?

They can either be your Primary detachment, you can ally these supplements to your army as long as the supplement states that they can ally with the parent codex. Which I'm pretty sure only Iyanden can't ally with Eldar. So primary detachment Crimson Slaughter, and allied Black Legion, should be A-OK

That isn't how 7ed works at all.
In 7ed you take detachments composed of any units in a faction. The CSM codex and supplements are all the CSM faction. Thus in a single Combined Arms Detachment you could take an HQ from Black Legion, 1 troop from CSM codex, 1 troop from Crimson Slaughter, Be'Lakor as your second HQ, a Lord of War, a Fortification from Stronghold Assault, and a hellblade from Imperial Armour 13. They would all be part of the same detachment and this detachment would only be primary if you select your warlord from it.

ansacs stop confusing the poor newbie.
What you are saying shows you did not, in fact, read the rules of the supplements themselves, as what you say is technically correct for the BRB rules, but brakes the supplement rules.
And you have got to follow both.
The supplement rules, for EVERY supplement, apply or not to a whole detachment, not on a unit basis-as a DETACHMENT basis.
Either its all crimson slaughter, or none of it is. no middle ground.
Now, what you CAD do, is take a CAD of regular CSM, a CAD of crimson and a CAD of black legion (even a CAD of dark eldar on top of it, if you want for some reason) as there is no detachment limit and they do not have to be of the same faction/subfaction.
But it does not change the fact that as per the rules in the supplement itself, you either apply to an entire detachment, or nothing of it.
And if anyone ever told you otherwise, he was either lying, misled himself, or failed to understand what was written. there is no room for debat about how its written in the supplements, that's how it works.
