Subject: Nick's Kings of War/Warhammer Samurai blog
Hi all, thought I'd start this thread to help keep me motivated whilst I build and paint a Samurai themed army that hopefully I'll be able to use in both Kings of War and Warhammer.
For this army I will be using the Kingdoms of Men list for Kings of War and the Empire list for Warhammer. Yes I am aware that there is a fan made Nippon list but I'm going to stick with the Empire book for the moment simply because I've got some good ideas about what I can use as proxies for various units in that book.
So the initial armies for both systems will be:
1 combat character of some description
1 Wizard
20 Yari Ashigaru (KoM pike phalanx/Empire spearmen)
2 blocks of 10 Arquebus Ashigaru (KoM Missile Troops/Empire Handgunners)
20 Samurai (KoM Foot Guard/Empire Great Swords)
10 Samurai Cavalry (KoM Knights/Empire Knightly Orders)
I'm starting small but hopefully that will mean I can get this chunk of the army finished in a reasonable time. As things stand at the moment I've got most of the miniatures I need for the basic army apart from the two characters. I suspect I'll end up using spare Samurai bits and pieces for the combat character but the Wizard I'm still thinking about. The rank and file miniatures are all from the Wargames Factory Rising Sun range. Which are admittedly not the greatest miniatures out there but for the price they charge I'm pretty damn happy with the quality.
I don't know if anyone is interested in this but I recorded a fairly lengthy unboxing/review video yesterday and uploaded it to the old youtubes. If anyone is interested in watching me frequently fail to get sprues out of plastic bags and talking too much about cardboard boxes then you might enjoy it. I also talk about the miniatures.
Of course though this thread is useless without at least some pics so here's what I've built so far:
10 Samurai Cavalry with command group:
The banner and musician's shell thingy come from the Yari set, the commander is the bloke with the naginata.
Rank and file test models:
left to right: Samurai, Arquebus Ashigaru, Yari Ashigaru showing off the strange approach WGF have towards bases.
Hopefully over the weekend I'll get a decent chuck of the other troops built and maybe start undercoating them.
Yeah I was thinking about the Bushido or Kensei ranges for characters but I'm not sure how well they will scale next to the WGF minis.
Not sure about adding ogres to the army. Obviously they would fit in nicely with KoW but not really in WHFB, Though of course that game has it's own unique stuff to deal with too. I think to start with I'm better off sticking with the generic stuff that will fit into both systems before branching out into the more specialist models for either.
Thanks for the decal recommendations not sure if I'll bother though because I'm worse with decals than I am with hand painting things.

Do you prime in black or white? I prefer white but if I need to prime when it's raining I tend to use black gesso. It's brush on, pretty cheap and works great.
