Hi mates!
The latest revision of the 40K rules tempted me to start collecting a complete army of around 1500 points. I have to say that I am not an active player but I decided to create an army list which, apart from looking good in a showcase, could also be used in a real game.
I always had a weakness for the IG but wanted to use a somewhat different fluff for it. Thus it came to life the idea of the:
29th Airfield Defence Guard (ADG) Detachment of the Imperial Navy
This formation is not a part of the Astra Militarum but instead belongs to a Naval Security Battalion of the Imperial Navy. Generally these battalions consist of units of armed soldiers intended to put down mutinies, board enemy ships, and protect Imperial Navy installations. My army is going to represent one of those units of navy soldiers seconded to protect imperial airfields and landing strips in the vicinity of combat zones.
The whole army list, which is designed purely for fluff, has a real-life equivalent. I partly adopted units, tasks and equipment of the Australian Airfield Defence Guards.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airfield_Defence_Guards
Below please find the list of units I intend to paint:
HQ: (Aka)
Command Squad (Company Command Squad)
- Ground Defence Officer (Company Commander)
- Honor Guard (Veterans)
- Liaison Officer Fighter Command (Master of the Fleet)
- Liaison Officer Bomber Command (Master of Ordnance)
- Command Vehicle (Chimera)
Technical Staff
- Enginseer
- Servitors
Standard:
Infantry Platoon
- Platoon Command Squad
- 2x Infantry Squad
- 3x Heavy Weapons Squad
- Conscripts
Honor Guard (Veterans)
Elite:
Special Forces (Militarum Tempestus Platoon)
Sniper Team (Ratlings)
Fast Attack:
Perimeter Patrol (Scout Sentinel Squadron)
Special Forces Transport (Valkyrie Squadron)
Support:
Anti Aircraft Artillery (Hydra Battery)
I already started with some units and applied test schemes. First pictures will follow soon.

Ok, at least the scheme for the bases is fixed now. Maybe not the best way to start an army with the bases but..hmmm....well
They represent various sections of an imperial airfield and associated facilities.

Really cool idea. If I remember correctly, there is a bit in one of the Eisenhorn books about Naval Security that gets used to help storm a cultist nobles place. It's a short blurb though.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Most info I could find relates to naval security members not involved in ground fighting. I feel free to interpret a little here and there to have a better match for this role especially in terms of equipment.

Yeah the blurb I'm talking about refers to the Naval Security as "The elite of Battlefleet Scarus". So it's definitely up to interpretation as to whether or not they are actually Naval Stormtroopers, or just attached to the battlefleet or whatever. Personally I like the idea of the different Battlefleets having their own elite units, but that's just me.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I am in the process of painting a command chimera attached to the command squad. One basic colour will be green as the whole formation is part of a Segmentum Pacificus fleet.
Additionally I printed decals featuring the imperial navy symbol in different sizes to be used on shoulder pads, vehicles, terrain and so on.

Finally I managed to complete a test model for my honor guard (veterans). I always had a weakness for the Mordian models and I think they are adequate to represent a unit of experienced soldiers able to serve with devotion. Additionally the veterans act as an honor guard whenever there is a need for representative duties e.g. inspections by high ranking military officials or the like.
As this is only a test model the paintjob is quite crude. My main intention was to select a proper scheme. Again the main colour is green to represent Segmentum Pacificus.

Additionally I made some small progress on the Chimera. After a few years of not completing a 40K vehicle I completely forgot about how many rivets are included

Very nice. I really love the colour scheme you've gone for, grey & green, very tasteful . I'm not too sure about the yellow antennae & top hatch bits, I think they would have looked better in the same colour as the turret / hull.
Just needs a bit of weathering now ::nods

Hi mates!
After becoming a father two years ago my hobby time declined dramaticaly but now I am able to slowly resume all the stuff waiting on my work bench. Thus I also continued with this project and finalized my command chimera.
It is not one of the super-realistic, heavily weathered, chipped or faded vehicles you can find a lot of around here but it turned out pretty much the way I intended it to be
Next will be three sentinels and maybe I even find the mojo to start some infantry
