I was wondering if this was a viable tactic. It seems like the two armies complement each other well, the orks providing the melee and numbers and the tau providing shooting and finesse. Does anyone think an ork detachment with tau allies would be effective?

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

Fluff-wise, most people prefer the opposite - sensible Tau who've hired ork mercenaries to do the close-up dirty work. Although modelling-wise, your version is more fun, especially if you use converted grots/goblins to count as Tau Fire Warriors etc, representing a Waagh which recently captured/stole a huge pile of Tau equipment, much to the delight of the meks and grots.

Back on topic, yes, from what I've seen, they do seem to complement each other fairly well.

I've always like the idea of a team of battlesuits who've accidentally been mistaken as Orks in eavy'mega armour. Every time they call in an extraction transport to get away the Orks seem to notice it and destroy it. So now they fight with the Orks until they can figure out another way to get away. Resigned to their fate, and starting to enjoy it... =)

When Orks and Tau were Allies of Convenience they were frequently taken as allies. I heard that Broasides were very usefull for Orks.

I used to them in 6th edition as allies of convenience. The long ranged ap2/1 was a very welcome addition to my cc oriented Orkz. The group I play in house-ruled a modified ally table, so I can still play them in the old way. In our group this isn't a problem as we want to play with more people (2vs2 or 3vs2) we do create weird alliances on the board anyway.

Now that they are moved to desperate allies this would pose a problem in general games and I doubt I would still ally them.

That would be a fun short story
