I have been building a force of Salamanders Space Space Marines over the last few years using only models that were available in the 1980's Rogue Trader period. Currently the force is pretty large an armour heavy so I decided to expand its ranks with some more infantry from the 1987 RTB01 boxset. The colour scheme and hand painted markings are drawn directly from the 1989 painting guide.

Tell me what you think. It was a joy to paint these lovely old models and I have included a painting guide on my blog at:

There is loads more retro 40k stuff there as well so please pop along and say hi, maybe even 'follow' the blog :-)

Cheers;

Legio

Awesome!
I've been planning on doing something similar, but can't decide on a chapter.

Brilliant stuff! I love it when people post pictures of mini's from my childhood. I had a load of old RT mini's at one stage, all bought from eBay, but I've lost or misplaced them

Cheers guys!

Joyboozer: definitely do it mate, it's a pleasure and there's something very enjoyable about painting classic minis. The sculpts aren't as refined as today's but they seem to have a whole lot more character!

As for chapter I would say try and get ahold of the 1989 Space Marinr painting guide and pick one in there for a number of reasons. Firstly it will give the figures that air of retro authenticity, secondly they will be legal for 40k and thirdly as they are all first founding chapters you can easily generate a legal 30k force with a bit of a reshuffle. That's why I'm happy with the Salamanders!

Sarpedon, that made me feel ill as I know how much some of these little gems can cost now! I hope you find them! If you do and you don't get around to painting them then I'm always in the market for old lead (and plastic!)

If you visit my blog I've also painted up a load of old school tanks to go with these guys!
