How do you guys make scouts work as a midfield unit?

I am thinking 5-10 bolter scouts with maybe a melta bomb and HB. Infiltrate/scout up onto a midfield objective or outflank in force to attack the enemy deployment zone.

Alternate gear could be considered, like heavy bolters, camo cloaks, etc.

So, how do you make 'tactical' scouts work?

They're one of the legions with the lost Primarchs, their primarch currently wandering around dazed and confused in an alternate reality where he is known as Jean Luc Picard.

My Crimson Fists Scouts run five Bolters with a Melta Bomb on the Sergeant. I stuff them all in a Land Speeder Storm for delivery. I should do drivebys with them though.

Raptors could do a good job with them, with the stand-still-for-Rending-Bolters ability. Admittedly not as good as snipers, but cheaper and against anything T3 S4 is better than Sniper. Bring Issodon as well for multiple other Infiltrating units to take the heat off them, and they should be able to sit and shoot well enough.

IF with Bolters re-rolling 1s could also help make them more accurate.

Sentinel of Terra is even better than plain IF. Twin-linked at half range is great on bs 3 with infiltrate and scout. I think Reecius from frontline gaming has a list with 60 SoT bolter scouts. 120 twin linked bolter shots on turn 1 is nasty.

ALWAYS equip scout sarges with mbs, unless they have snipers. Most battles they won't come into play, but 1 in 4 (pulled that stat out my arse), an opponent will move a vehicle closer to them than is safe, then it often goes bye bye.

I think scouts only truly "shine" thanks to 1 thing: the Land Speeder Storm.

In itself a weak gun platform with little firepower but combined with the scouts become tactically awesome.

Key objectives near board edges? Outflank.

Relic needs to be caught early? Infiltrate.

Hard to reach objectives? Deepstrike reserve + turboboost FTW.

If you're part of a detachment that can mess with reserve rolls (Tigurius, for example), you can really control the objective games with fast ObSec units. I always equip the LSS with a heavy flamer to negate the poor BS of the scouts, and it helps clear enemy troops off of objectives too.

From a purely firepower standpoint, Sentinels of Terra with 5 bolters in a LSS is a decent little gun platform.

I also sometimes field Templar scouts in LSS with CCWs for a "light" assault unit, crusader USR is a nice boost to an already mobile unit.

Hope this helps.

5 scouts, melta on the sarge, HB with the hellfire shell all riding in a Land Speeder Storm.

Camo-cloaks can always with their survivability, thing is all the squad must have it, not just 5 (in case you combat squad)

The storm is a brilliant unit, I run 5 scouts with shotguns and a combi flamer sgt plus a heavy flamer on the storm. Makes a fantastic gunboat and the shotguns allow you hop out and charge if needs be while still laying down a decent field of fire.

If you want to run pure gunboat the Bolters are probably the best choice but having the option to shoot then charge works well for me, I have a bad habit of charging units far too tough for them to really harm and getting away with it

i am a dark angels and i run standard scouts with boltguns i use them mostly as cheap cannon fodder most of the time often feeding them to enemy flanking/direct melee units to slow them down. if they manage to kill somebody and buy me a turn or two by forcing a deathstar or w/e to sit in place theyve more than been useful.
