I... actually don't know. Help?

Well, title says it all. I have an idea for a blog here on Dakka, but are there any rules or guidelines to follow?

Nothing outside of the normal forum rules I believe.
As always image quality and relevance is important but I think the dakka blogs get a touch more leeway than most.

Although you might check this thread briefly

Post stuff. Respond to comments. Post more stuff. If there's criticism, respond positively to it and try and improve. That's about it. I've done a bunch of them and it's just a forum thread of your own to do your own thing really.

I would give this one advice;

When posting new stuff remember to update the first post with the new pictures/ideas (just cut-n-paste) as well.
This will both cater to the people who follow you closely (who press "First unread" and who like to see your new stuff there) AND people who has just discovered your blog (allowing them to catch up quickly by going through the OP).

I wouldn't update the OP with the new post, because by the time your thread reaches a few pages, that first post is going to be too long to actually post. DO, however, update the title of the thread with the date and content of the update. When people see "Stormtroopers done! 1/7" they know the update will have new stuff in it and not just idle conversation.

Also, isn't that what the blog view is for. You click on that and you get the thread's main messages. I think it's the thread creator's longer posts or something like that. That way you get all the important updates and can expand the replies that you want to read.

Exactly, blog view is there for just such a purpose. Filter Thread does basically the same thing.
