Something occured to me while listening to classical music, while writing my code for Visual Studio. I wonder if any of you dakkanaughts are also captivated by classical music as I.
Which is youf favourite composer, and which of his/her works do you like most? Why so?
Currently, my favourite is Johan Strauss II as his waltzes are really melodious and jolly as well as laid back and emotional at the right times. My favourite compositions are "Blue Danube" and "Die Fledermaus".
To say I dabble in the genre is an understatement; I'll often have Classical music on in the background while studying/working on essays ect (I prefer soundtracks for writing fiction), but couldn't really name any pieces or even identify composers. However, I'm partial to JS Bach and Wagner, "Ride of the Valkyries" probably being my favourite piece in general.
One of those things I've always wanted to do is learn the history of Classical music and the theory behind it, I've just never found the motivation or time to really sit down and get started? On that note, any suggestions on a good place to start, a site or a book or something?
The Russian composer Modest Modest mussorgsky. That said, the best live performance I've heard was was Ravel's Belero. Look up that song because it's amazing. Dudeman had one day to write a symphony so he wrote one tune and repeated it over and over adding in more instruments as it went along. Freaking brilliant.
I favor opera though and with that I have to go with Verdi. I saw a performance of Tosca (not by Verdi) and it might be my favorite opera now. It helped that they had a screen with subtitles.

I am a fan of classical choir music.
Choir Music is beautiful. Especially modern day classic music.
I think the sad bit is where people don't listen to it.

I have Classic FM on in my car quite a lot, and have some on my Spotify account. I know what I like but don't really know a whole lot about it, history or composer's.

Also a Tchaikovsky fan here. If I’m going to listen to classical, he normally ends up in the CD player.
As wargamers, we should all listen to Holst’s The planets at least Mars. While not as over-exposed as ride of the vaylieries, it’s music to kill by.
I'll second Medium of Death's love of the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, but for traditional Classical Music, I've always loved Vaughan William's 'The Lark Ascending' - it's hauntingly beautiful and seems to capture the essence of Britain in one.
I also love Bach's Prelude to Cello Suite No.1 in G Major.
I mostly listen to solo piano. Scriabin is good, as is Scarlatti (Chopin said he wanted to play Scarlatti at his concerts), and I'm getting started on Soler. Alkan has his moments too, like his symphony for solo piano.
