Anyone tried this?

I was looking at the boxart for shield of baal, and saw this guy's skin;

Spoiler:

The first thing I thought of was putting down pink / crackle medium / bone white to simulate it a bit more (as opposed to white / pink wash)

I am just not sure if it is something that would actually work as most crackle mediums want to be quite thick.

I've never used one before, is this a possible way of doing this? Is it repeatable for tons of little nids?

Thanks

I personally cant see it working, not on infantry size tyranids anyway.. Maybe on the larger models. The layers will be way too thick and if you wanted to highlight the paint would soon totally fill any tiny crackles you might get. Id look at doing some other effects if you want interesting skin

Yeah I think the only shot I would have is to palette knife it on thick and hope for the best, which isn't really repeatable and is effectively the last thing I can do. Might test it out and see

I've got some crackle medium, i did some tests on a bit of plastic sheet, the main problem is that with thin layers yes there are cracks, but they are so tiny you can barely see; hairline. For larger cracks you have to go quite thick. Which on infantry doesn't work.

Maybe hitting it with a wash would help outline those cracks?

It probably won't work. I tried using the crackle medium on a base to simulate a cracked earth effect, but the crackle medium at that small of an application just doesn't crackle enough. There were lines for sure, but they didn't crackle the way I was hoping for. I can't imagine the stuff working on an infantry model at all.

The crackles wouldn't work liek that...it would be all over the place...and if you want deep cracks you need to throw on alot of paint to do it...I bought some to do cracked desert bases....it didn't work out well...the pattern was too circular like each base was it's own land mass...it sucked

Thanks for the feedback guys, stopped me from wasting my time.

Shame though, it would have been pretty cool
