Hi all,

I am looking for any sort of resin (that won't come in huge qtys hopefully) that's easily flexible at room temperature (or kept in warm water) after it cured. Must resist 90 degrees or more bents, with sapping
I am planning to make a mold of the dreadknight sword - once i find one on ebay, once i get some lego bricks from home and once i get the Oyumaru i ordered some time ago

The reason i need the resin to be flexible is as i want to build a throne. Not any more, but the Iron Throne . Contemptor-sized. Mind-blown.

So...any advices ? I know green stuff (cheap knockoff) is fairly flexible (or can be made if more yellow part is added)....but it might turn out an expensive and time consuming experience if i mold 50 - or so swords. Might even go crazy with 100, to get a design closer to G. Martin's original vision.
Thanks in advance guys !

Fair point mate. I guess they wouldn't expect me to buy 50 Dreadknight kits, though ...

I might modify it a bit and fill the gap close to the hilt, but i really like the design so i don't feel like building one from greenstuff or parts.

Will wait for other opinions before placing an order for that one.
Thanks for the input !

Assuming you make your own sword as copying existing work is illegal and unethical, like was mentioned above, Alumilite resin (and most other resins for that matter) are flexible for a while after the initial set before it is fully cured. By removing the piece from the mold prior to a full cure it can then be draped over another object and held in place until a full cure takes place. Once the full cure happens the piece will stiffen and hold the shape it was held in while pliable indefinitely.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

If you use less hardner in the resin it will be more soft, but this could lead to bad cures.

A better idea it to just heat it - most home cure resin's can be made soft by putting into boiling water (or use a heat gun, but be careful).

I bend resin (and plastic) parts all the time doing conversions and scenic bases. Practice on spure, or test parts first.

Use can use silicone for you molds, rather than resin, then resin or GS for your casts.

Casting is a very time consuming process and has a fairly steep learning curve. In re-reading your post, I would suggest you find some toy swords, or make them from plasticard or something.

If you need 50-100 swords, that is a LOT of work.
During the learning process, expect only about half of your casts to be good. Now, since parts of the swords won't be visible, you may be able to recover more, but casting is a bit of an experiential art form to do well (i.e. has a steep learning curve).

Or make the swords from plasticard, and just cast the hilts.

Thanks for all the replies guys

I know casting is quite difficult, i did some before on the vertical empennage of a P-51D (in my plane modelling time) in an attempt to use the internal structure of the parts
I have been quite successful in the casting part, not so in the cutting part. Resin kept cracking as it was very thin...

Anyway, back to this one. I don't want to build the swords from plasticard as this will make them flat and i'm looking for a more 3D (embossed, if you will) look
However, i only need one side to be fully cast and detailed, the other part can simply be flat. Exception for about 15-20 of them which will go on the very top and will be visible from both sides

I'll start looking either for toy swords, or fill in the one from GW and create a custom hilt. HAve to think very well well about it, luckily i have time until summer to build the mold as i can't cast inside the house.

Thanks a lot for all the input, if anything else feel free to comment
Cheers,
