I just picked up a Coteaz model so I just started looking at his specs...and I can't quite figure out how best to play him. Here's what I've come up with so far...

At 100 points, he has the normal Inquisitor features plus is an ML2 psyker, has a 2+, has a master crafted Nemesis Daemon Hammer, a 24" S4 AP- Assault D6 shooter, has the "reroll / force reroll seize the initiative" special rule and "I've been expecting you"

At his point level, he is a pretty potent Inquisitor compared to a Malleus or Xenos decked out with all the bells and whistles, but what to do with him?

1. The "seize the initiative" special rule doesn't affect how to play him so we don't have to worry about that.

2. The Nemesis Daemon Hammer is a potent CCW, which would tell me to stick him in a CC Henchmen Warband (I run a Crusader/DCA/Ministorum Priest/Psyker Warband in a LRC), take advantage of his ML2 and Hammer, letting him swing last cracking open tanks, killing MCs, Daemons, Psykers, and using Force on multi-wound models. Makes sense, but then if deep strikers come in nearby, "I've been expecting you" is wasted.

3. "I've been expecting you" seems to me...having never used it, nor seen it used...to be VERY situational at best. I'm reading the rule and trying to figure out how best to implement it. Since I run my Inquisition detachment alongside a Sentinels of Terra detachment, I usually have a Centurions squad with me, so I naturally thought I could put Coteaz in with them. If I didn't have the Centurions, I could have a Henchmen Warband of Jokaero/Special Weapons Acolytes/ PC Servitors and stick Coteaz in there. I could use him to drop Prescience on them, or some other buff psychic powers, and in the RARE chance my opponent arrives from reserves 12" from Coteaz, I could light them up...but that rarity is the whole problem I have with this special rule.

How often would my opponent actually come in 12" from Coteaz? I thought that maybe if I allied with some giant IG blob unit, and spread them thin across the whole board giving my opponent no room uncovered it would make this rule more viable, since they would likely arrive 12" from SOME portion of the unit, but then I realized the rule stated "12" from COTEAZ", not 12" from Coteaz UNIT. We are looking at (A.) a 4' by 6' game board, (B.) an enemy that has to have reserves, (C.) they have to be scatter-incurring deep strike (since I can't imagine a player willingly arriving within 12" of Coteaz (D.) they have to be placed within range of Coteaz to possibly scatter into 12" range of him (E.) they have to actually scatter into range to activate "I have been expecting you" AND (F.) they have to still be in LOS of COTEAZ.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF THIS HAPPENING? One in a hundred games? One in a thousand?

I've seen a lot of posts talking about how wonderful and game changing this rule is, but honestly, I don't see it. I was speaking with a fellow player last night who referred to Coteaz as a force multiplier. I really don't see that either. He doesn't buff or boost the unit he is with, and this magic short range interceptor rule he imparts on his unit has extremely limited usability. I see him as a tastier CC Malleus Inquisitor with some extra dirty tricks, but he's certainly no Tigurius.

Am I misjudging the importance of his special rule? Let me know.

Just getting the ability to re-roll the seize/force your opponent to re-roll if he succeeds is why I bring him.

If Coteaz is close to an objective and you face Drop Pod armies, your opponent might try dropping down close enough for I've Been Expecting You to work.

Well, he has dropped a lot in value from the days when he made all your GK Inquisitorial Henchmen count as Troops.
Still, the 12" bubble is bigger than you think. If you have enough scary guns in his unit, it makes your opponent think twice and maybe a third time about where to land. In effect, the bubble is more like 16-18" because if the deep-strikers are being cautious, they will also be aware of the scatter possibilities and the footprint of the unit. So even if they don't trigger the "expecting you" rule, the threat of the rule creates a big zone of denial. And sometimes just getting the opponent to react to you is enough of an initiative stealer to make a big difference.

This is how I play him when I do.

3 Plasmacannon servitors.
2 Jokaeros

Put him on top of a void shield generator upgraded to 3 void shields.

I roll on Divination for Prescience and Perfect timing.

Stick your shooting units within the void shield limits.

Anything that deep strikes within the void shield bubbles deals with a nasty I've been expecting you.

I've had games involving Coteaz and void shields that had people give up on turn 2. It can be very nasty.
