Do you just keep adding thin layers of the colour you want untill it shows? Or base coat it with a lighter colour then add the colour you want on top? If the later is the better method, how do you decide what to use for say yellow or red etc?

You can prime in a lighter color since it is easier to darken in the places where you want a darker shade.

Another way is to find high opacity paints since they have a very nice coverage

However, my go to solution is underpainting... if you are going for red or yellow I would lay down a layer of say earth brown. Then ontop paint the yellow or red. Brown covers better and gives a nice warm tone to red and yellow.

Going from black to yellow is close to impossible hah. Going from black to red is rather easy however.

Even going to white from black will usually result in a terrible chalky mess.

You'll have to build up layers with a medium color like beige or gray first but if your final expectation is yellow - I'd not prime black at all.

Thats my painting scheme dawg!

Sets of very thin coats shading up seem to be working..ish..
Once I get my wet pallet going tomoro, keeping the consistency good without paint drying out should make this helluva easier
