I have been working on my nid force lately, and lots of tourny lists on here use 3 Flyrants.

I am not sure if they scale in relation to the point cost from 2-3 though. Looking at a flyrants role of medium strength shooting, mobile synapse, and a mobile lynchpin for the force, I feel like 2 is plenty. A third seems extraneous. Throw ion a harpy to peel off some sturdier hullpoints, and it seems like an effective airforce.

Are there some strategic nuances I am missing?

Bonus question: Think a bastion w Comms relay is worth it in a list with 2 dropfexes. Of course there are some rippers, but overall, worth? Or should I just slog the venomthroppe and hope there is a ruiin in my deployment.

Aftermath can be calculated.

3 Is generally considered the sweetspot as it just takes it past the point where a list with no dedicated AA can effectively take them on. Add onto that that Harpies are just not even in the same league of durability and that another Flyrant gives you more chances for better psychic powers and it's easy to see why 3 > 2 + Harpy. Flyrants also have generally have a Haywire template to deal with higher AV so a Harpies unreliable Venom Cannon is usually a bit of a waste.

With the Venomthrope in the bastion you could throw an escape hatch upgrade onto the bastion and place it up the field, that way the Vope can make a big move the turn your fexes arrive instead of spending several turns slogging it across the board.

besides, 'nids can now take 3 HQs, and no other 'nid HQ is really much to write home about

Dear mum,

The assimilation of organic matter is going better than expected. We hit a bit of a snag with some already barren planets, but we made do. I was super glad for the cookies and carapace cosies you made; they made the frost wasteland much easier to get through, those Valhallans gave me some pretty envious looks, you know, before I ate them. I've been assigned to a Tervigon, and I'm so mad. I can't believe I have to share a synapse with that guy. Can't believe I didn't get to go with Jeff, 'member that Flyrant I was telling you about? Some days I feel like the Hive Mind just doesn't appreciate my non-unique talents. Thinking of you,

Love, your ravenous offspring

Why thank you, it's all in a days consuming. It's always important to start the day with a high-fibre diet, I recommend Kroot where available.

LOL that was great. although the Tervigon is more a "unless you're taking 270 gaunts you'll proably be taking this sucker as a troop"

Haha, thank you kindly to be honest, I don't play 'Nids, so I just googled Tyranid HQ options and went from there.

Although the prospect of taking 270 of anything is always appealing...

I think you can take a comms relay on an aegis line, which might be more useful and cheaper than a bastion.

For the short time I played with em, I ran four and it was hilarious. but I don't have the time or space for the hordes of nids to play a battle forged list so im selling :/

Wat? With four flyrants where do you find the points to bring a true horde? Most nids list I've seen as of late bring as many big bugs (flying or otherwise) to the table and have a couple units of rippers, mucolids, and assorted 'thropes. Not much of a horde.

And as for OP's question: Yes. They are one of the most efficient engines of destruction in the game.

Five might be too many, but three is certainly not.

if you want a space saver list go with warriors as troops.

or Mucolids. . .3 models not much bigger than warriors fill all your troop requirement needs. Or Kavik can just sell his 'Nids to me. . .

I faced one Flyrant last week and against my Orks it was routinely hitting all 12 shots and wounding my T5 bikes 10-11 times per shooting phase, in a 1250 point game. Needless to say, Nids won. I'd hate to see 2 at 1750 which is this upcoming weeks game. How many points til y'all throw 3 in a list?

3 is pretty commom fare for a 1750 list. 4 at 1850. You can do 5 at 1850 as well, but I think there might be better ways to make a list.

I've done three Flyrants at 1000 against Tau - almost tabled them turn four, even with a Riptide.

Someone asked me for a quick 750 pick up game after our main games for the day this Saturday. It took a lot more restraint than I thought it would to not bring 2 Flyrants I'm succumbing to the dark side. The only reason I didn't do it is because the kid is still learning and I didn't want to scare him off. Am I a bad person?
