I had an offer to sell my Eldar for $1000 American. It's about 7-8k worth of points. 70% of it is painted to a good tabletop standard.
I play alot, however I don't love Eldar. It was my first army way back in 2nd ed days. When I got back into 40k 2 years ago I picked them up due to familiarity. My heart really resides with 30k and Night Lords though. That's where all the proceeds would go.
So I am asking anyone who has actually sold a army. Would you do it again? I really am torn about this. I don't love Eldar fluff but I do love how flexible the army is to play. Honestly it doesn't hurt that it has a good book as well.
Some things to consider. I don't need the money for anything else(bills, food, gambling debts etc...). It's just a way to justify me getting into 30k.
So if you have sold a larger army tell me about it. I'm really on the fence about this.

I would say leave it if you are torn. Better to wait and make a positive decision yourself rather than just take this guy up on his offer just because its there. I only sell stuff that I look at in my collection and think to myself "Why have I got this. I'm never going to use it. Onto Ebay you go". If you don't think this keep it. Simple really.
Just my two cents
Cheers

If you enjoy Eldar, keep it. Nothing wrong with having a back up army. I've only ever sold individual units I don't need or to fund the purchase of better units.

If you like how fun the army can be to play the keep ahold of it, the only reasons I have ever sold my armies (Aside from Divorce) is when I have fallen out of love with them completely (for a variety of reasons). If you're on the fence then keep them, otherwise if you sell them (and get significantly less than you paid for them) you may end up getting nostalgic and end up buying it all against, losing out moneywise on what you already had.

I sold quite a few armies in the past and only regret selling my first army.
Why not keep 3000 points so you can still play when you want and just sell the rest?

I've sold several armies, and highly recommend it. If you don't love them anymore, then by all means let them go and get something better.
(And if you're interested in selling parcels, PM me!)

I have been trying to sell my CSM army since june of last year. I get so many low ballers telling me my army prime coat is crap and it is very insulting. I have made only one sale here in Dakkadakka for the citadel spray gun while I have made many sales on Bartertown.com. These people are more serious unlike the flakes here at dakkadakka. Its perfectly fine to ask for the price, but it is another thing to lead some one on and request the paint to be stripped off and pack it into a box and then never hear from them again. My attitude is that Dakkanuts are not deserving. Once I finally sell every thing, I will leave this place and never come back.
Another tip is to sell your army in $100 bundles on ebay. However you gotta price below what GW retails for new unless its Professionally Painted and you have the high quality pics to prove it. I sold my 3 piece bundle of 1 vindicator, predator, and daemon prince for $100 which if brand new would have been $160. I tried selling my paint supplies bundle for nearly $300 but that did not get any bites so I think I have to break that up into easier $100 bundles.
If the buy it now option runs out of days, then you clearly have to lower the price or put it up for auction.
Also I do not understand why so many people bother me about my havocs and only want pewter?
Also the guy offering $1000 for your 7000-8000 pt army is obviously low balling you. Wait for someone else to make a similar offer and try to get them to make counter offers like a silent bid. Do not be rushed to sell.

Thanks for some of the input guys. I wasn't really trying to sell it initially. I made a joke that Id sell them in a heartbeat for a 30k army. That's how all this started. I know if I broke it up and all that I could get more but that's time and effort I wasn't looking to get into. At $1000 its roughly 50% retail. He is getting a deal for sure.
Just so many things to consider.

1st, not sure where the bitter attitude has come from, but I have had nothing but positive experiences. Even when I've asked people about models and then ended up not going through, there's never been hard feelings. 2nd, it's often easier selling the models individually. Most people won't buy a $300 army, but will buy a Vindicator or a single Land Raider in a heartbeat. You may be pricing things wrong if you're not really getting it sold. 3rd, some people are really attached to metal figures and only want that.

Take the money. That sounds like a great deal for you unless your lot includes tons of limited edition and or metal figures?
and you're also getting rid of it all at once which saves you splitting it into smaller chunks.

I would just keep it. You could always find another local Apocalypse player or get a small group of 2000 points players to gang up on you.

So what you're saying is that you could run almost any power meta. You need to talk him up to at least $1300-1400 for 2-3 powerhouse armies.

Don't sell.
The first reason is because you're going to get a fraction of what you put into it in the first place. In a world where people can reliably get 80% off retail new in box, having something that's pre-assembled and especially pre-painted is going to drive the value through the floor. Even if you think you're a good painter, unless you're one of a very talented few, your average customer is going to have to strip the paint off, among other work.
$1,000 seems like a lot, but it's a tiny amount compared to how much that would sell for new. If there's any chance you're going to want to play eldar in the future, it's in your best interest to hold on to what you've got.
And it's important to have that kind of time frame because 40k minis are a durable good. You bought some eldar minis 20 years ago, and then you played with them later. Who knows how things are going to look 20 years from now? And how much it would cost to assemble a new army then.
If you know, deep down, you have no interest whatsoever and never will, then it's probably worth it to cash out as you'll at least be getting SOMETHING. Otherwise, just start buying 30k stuff and keep your eldar.
Heck, as 30k becomes older and more popular, you might find yourself being able to trade your eldar for 30k stuff in the near future, and mini swapping will always give you a better deal than passing through cash first.
