So I'm a long time ork player, i've dabbled in necrons and chaos and space marines, and tyranids... ...and Daemons, and some tau...

Finally worked my way round to imperial guard, which I'm modelling as rebel grots to keep my interest up and my impulse buys down - don't buy so much if everything needs converting, and every unit needs a box of grots to make it work!

I've been thinking about all the synergy required in a guard army - no other army can use it quite so much. we've got war hymns, orders, prescience Psykers, ogryns with warboss statlines, cool weapons available everywhere, the list goes on.

one of the synergy plans I've got is to put a priest in a tempestus squad, in a chimera. tempestus take 2 hot shot volley guns, chimera rolls forward, priest does a hymn, squad gets relentless and pumps out 8 S4 AP3 shots at 24" range at full BS. darn, just notriced war hymns require you be in combat.

Another is to try and get endurance off on a unit of bullgryns, that'd hurt.

I also plan to utilise the fact that chimeras can have commands issued out of them. rolling a platoon up the field into rapid fire range, disembark one unit and issue FRFSRF, then if they survive get them back in next turn and get a fresh squad out, repeat until enemy are dead or we lose contact with the platoon.

priest in a unit of 50 conscripts for a 175 point fearless blob? get lucky with a psyker that gets forewarning and if anyone gets to combat, the emprah protects gives them a rerollable 4++!

A techpriest near a chimera on turn 1, with night fighting. techpriest gives the chimera power of the machine spirit, chimera fires at 2 targets, and lights them both up with its searchlight for the rest of the army to shoot.

basalisks have searchlights, and searchlights don't require line of sight (somehow) nor that you hit so pick a unit, try and kill it with the basalisk, then light it up.

anyone got any good mixes that work with astra militarum? I imagine them being battle brothers with other imperium armies is a real opportunity for some nasty combos, especially as I think marines can't usually get prescience, but guard can. prescienced sternguard, that'd hurt.

I have a piece of tactical genius to impart.

Get two bullgryn squads with the big gives extra cover shields, line them up touching bases as one 10 bullgryn 400mm line, and roll some tanks with camo netting behind.

Then collect the tears of your enemies.

You love the T-Rex. Its both a hero and a Villain in the first two movies. It is the "king" of dinosaurs. Its the best. You love your T-rex.
Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Disturbing in a way how far you could potentially take that tactic. If you throw a bullgryn squad with those shields behind an ADL then put your tanks in a row behind them the tanks would be getting a 2+ cover save just sitting there with camo netting.

A suitably orky strategy is to ally with (converted) Inquisitor karamazov. He allows you to fire among other shells s10ap1 Lance blasts which don't scatter if you center them on friendly models. You can fire this into combat . Tie something up with conscripts and blast it to kingdom come! Or use outflankers/infiltrators and run up to within 1" of an enemy tank and 'splode it.

really depends how you want to play..IG troops are not amazing by any means, but in large blobs they stand a chance to kill something..tanks and lobbing shells is what you need to really kill stuff..troops are just there to play clean up and sieze objectives
