I have been playing 40k for around 6 months now with necrons and love playing them. I bought sanctum reach with a friend and absolutely love the orks now, I find them much nicer to paint then necrons and now I want to start an army, my question is what are good units to buy for a 1000 point army? I don't have the codex and this isn't for tournaments or anything, it's just an idea of what is good to get if I see it cheap on ebay or something, thanks

Waaagh! Ork Warboss on Warbike

Waiting at the Dark Tower steps..

Buy boyz! Then more BOYZ! AND THEN MORE BOYYZ!!

Then a warboss.

In all seriousness boyz are the work force of your army and you will need a good amount of them. Then choose stuff that works for your play style.

I'm glad I jumped on the recent eBay sale I found. 100 boyz for $150. With one more purchase (warboss) I'll already have a full green tide. I'll throw in a few Nobz and later get Da Vulcha Skwad for some hilarious mobility shenanigans.

Oh, and green spray primer

So what is the difference between ork boyz and ork nobz? I have 5 nobz and then 4 more which I think are nobz but might be boyz.

Nobz are basically the sergeants of a boyz squad but can also make their own unit. They get stuff like boss poles and power klaws

Decide what aspect of orks you like the most.

Like footslogging hordes? Get a ton of boyz and stuff to back them up. Maybe something like a few koptas, a truck full of 'eavy armored boyz or meganobz, a small squad of stormboyz, kommandoes or something like this will fit well - depending on what you like/need the most.

Like speedfreaks? Get a ton of transport vehicles - battlewagonz and trucks and bikers. You'll need lots of boyz to ride this vehicles either but not as many as you'd need for a footslogging list.

Like ork walkers? Get a ton of them. Aim for a dreadmob formation as they don't work that good out of it. You'll need 3 deff dreads, 9 killa kanz, 2 naughts, a big mek and a painboss. A warboss is alsoneeded as you'dget huge benefits from WAAAGH! in this list.

Like a stompa? Get it! It's a great LOW that's one of the best ballanced superheavies right now. Support it with whatever you have and you're good to go.

Right now orkses are one of the best ballanced codexes and all can work if you stick to the theme. Probably only the walker wall is a bit meh but that's only due to core rules and the ammount of AT weapons that everyone brings to fight superheavies and MC.
Almost every list will benefit greatly from mek gunz.

This makes me think you don't have the codex yet. If so, I'd consider getting it and really looking at the models and read the fluff. From that you might get a better idea what to buy. You have a lot of options with Orks, but as koooaei said they work better if you have a lot units with the same mobility / armor / cost so that the opponent will never have enough of the right gun to kill them all.

Later you can invest in another "mode" to mix up your lists.
