I live in Canada and can't seem to find white spirit.

Perhaps look for "mineral turpentine" or "turpentine substitute" - they are sometimes known as that in the parts of North America.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Depending on how much you are looking for - most hardware stores will carry it as well. Various names of course - when I buy it for painting in the house...I get odorless turps. When I buy it for resizing molds...I get Naptha. When I buy it for thinning large quantities of oil based paints...I get mineral spirits. All pretty much the same thing, just sold in different sized containers at different stores (and the odorless turps, are more or less odorless).
