Hey everyone! I'm currently starting a P250 project with some friends, and chose to play Chaos Space Marines. After a lot of brain racking I finally decided to play Death Guard thanks to their pre-heresy color scheme and the new Calas Typhon model.

The thing is - I would like to include a second legion in my army to provide some visual contrast, I just can't decide which. At first I thought Emperors Children would be cool and also fit in fluff wise, but I don't really care for the purple color scheme. Then I thought "Word Bearers", because the crimson would go great with the green and white of the Death Guard, only to realize that their pre-heresy colors are mostly grey, black and a little red. Plus, quickly skimming over some fluff I can't find any ties to the Death Guard other than some meetings between Typhon and Erebus.

So my question is - which legions did/do the Death Guard fight alongside/have strong ties to?

I guess I'm mostly looking at the traitor legions, as I'll probably end up including some more demonic units like Obliterators and such.

Thanks already for your replies. I know there are some very knowledgable people on here

Luna Wolves were their most common allied force, iirc

(Grey Knights 4500+) (Eldar 4000+ Pts) (Tyranids 3000 Pts) (Tau 3000 Pts) (Imperial Guard 3500 Pts) (Doom Eagles 3000 Pts) (Orks 3000+ Pts) (Necrons 2500 Pts) (Daemons 2000) (Sisters of Battle 2000) (2 Imperial Knights)

Indeed. One of the reasons Mortarion turned traitor (before the whole plague thing) is that Horus was his closest (read only) friend amongst the other Primarchs.

The Death Guard will have fought alongside most other legions at some point.

The Word Bearers and Death Guard haven't specifically fought any major campaign in the books together to date - the Word Bearers are not involved in the first Istvaan campaign, and then the bulk of them head off with the World Eaters to attack Ultramar. The main time they will be in the same place at sizeable strength is in the aftermath of the Isstvaan dropsite massacre - the extermination campaign to hunt down the remainder of the Raven guard, Iron hands and Salamanders - because all the traitor legions were there.

That was a war of skirmishes which degenerated into a confused mess, so it's not unreasonable that a Death Guard battalion might have picked up some Word Bearer hangers-on, or been sent some as reinforcements - the Word Bearers were a numerous, infantry heavy legion, much like the Death Guard, and since they were in the second wave at the dropsite wouldn't have taken anything like the casualties the Death Guard had suffered to that point.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Shame that the Luna Wolves also have a white-ish color scheme, but I like the quick piece of fluff you offered regarding the Word Bearers locarno, thanks!

Somehow it just feels better when I build and army with some kind of background that makes sense as opposed to wildly mixing and matching things without any sense of purpose.

Maybe Sons of Horus? Looks a little more green, and still best friends

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also don't forget that Typhon of the Death Guard was good buddies with Erebus of the Word Bearers, so there's precedence in an alliance.

The Justaerin and Catulan Reavers squads from the Luna Wolves 1st Company wore black armour. You could have a pre-Heresy Captain Abaddon leading the Justaerin.

Aye, Night Lords and Black Legion are the way to go! Everyone else thought they were weird.....
