Hi to all!
Thought I could do with some help from people in the know regarding 40k and starting up a fresh ork army.
Years ago I had the 1993 40k set but never really managed to start up properly.
Now years later I have decided to finally get an Ork army going and do it properly this time!
I have started by buying the black reach set and the stormclaw set over the last few weeks and now I'm trying to figure out what best to do with them.
I plan to start off and ready(make paint etc) a 500 point army for some taster battles and Build up from there so.....
Does anyone care to give me some starter pointers on what to ready first?
This is what I seem to have to choose from so far,

1 x Weirdboy (love the idea of random messiness and spontanious mischief in battles)
2 x warboss's with Pk 1 including squig
10 x nobs
20 x boys
10 x grots
1 x runtherd
3 x killa kans
3 x defkoptas

Not quite sure what the clan status does nowadays but I'm liking death skulls colours so far.

Thanks for any help/advice in advance!

Paint everything before you buy anything else.

At least spend a little time customising each model to make your army that bit more special.

That's it really!

As far as planning out your army is concerned, just make sure you're playing with models you like. If you're unsure and winning is a priority, try proxying models before making a choice.

Personally, I like to have a good mix of armour and infantry. So I'd get my hands on some tanks next, if I were you. That said, mobs of Ork Boyz is a fluffy thing with Orks, so it's not like you HAVE to do that if you don't like tanks.

Enjoy the hobby!

Thanks, not had a chance to sit down and really set up and paint everything yet, but looking forward to it.
Have not played properly for years but like random ork madness in a battle.
I find things backfiring can be just as fun as them working, the more mental the better

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hello and welcome!

I’ve been playing Orkz about one year so far and must say it is a lot of fun. Good choice!!!

I’m maybe wrong (still not enough battles and painting experience) but if I were you, I would do the following:

You currently have army around 1000 pts according to you list. You can go with Ork Horde Detachment (see the roster below). So first assemble everything and star playing and have fun!!!
Little advice: assemble Nobz and Killa Kans from the Stormclaw with magnets so later you can change their hand and weapons. And don’t glue additional bitz at first (as I did) because later you might want to do it more properly.

Orks Codex (2014) (Ork Horde Detachment) (969pts)

HQ (294pts):
Grukk Face-Rippa, Scourge of the Sanctus Reach (130pts)
Warboss (94pts), Bosspole (5pts), 'Eavy Armour (4pts), Power Klaw (25pts), Shoota
Weirdboy (70pts), Psyker Mastery Level 2 (25pts)

Elites (270pts) - Nobz (270pts):
Boss Nob (48pts), Bosspole (5pts), Power Klaw (25pts), Shoota
2 x Nob (43pts), Power Klaw (4pts), Shoota
2 x Nob (23pts), Big Choppa (5pts), Shoota
5 x Nob (18pts), Choppa, Slugga

Troops (165pts):
9x Boyz (65pts), Slugga and Boy w/ Big Shoota (11pts)
9x Boyz (65pts), Slugga and Boy w/ Big Shoota (11pts)
10x Gretchin, Runtherd (30pts)

Fast Attack (90pts) – 3 x Deffkoptas (90pts)

Heavy Support (150pts) – 3 x Killa Kans (150pts)

Automatically Appended Next Post:

For the next step (after few games) I would buy Painboy, 2 boxes of Shoota Boyz and Trukk or Battlewagon. Then get rid of Killa Kans and one of HQ to have space in your roster for them.
But after few games and careful reading of the codex you will know what to do yourself.

As for painting, if necessary, find a tutorial on YouTube which you like and simply follow it. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT4FXPRrNIA&index=3&list=LLMbQgPsUV-_QtEkN_86X_kg
